I worked at Biogen full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits, salary and great colleagues. Good systems and great past. Unfortunately everything has changed with the new CEO and with the McKinsey project to cut costs.

    Cons

Nepotism, politics, short term focus. Lack of clear strategy. Constant restructuring. Fear to speak up. Constant cost cutting. Lack of long term perspective.

    Advice to Management

    Respect your people

I have been working at Biogen full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Pros greatly outweigh cons and include pay, benefits, work life balance and the people are great. Lots of very smart employees. The Company is one the takes risks to bring really important products to market.

    Cons

There has been tremendous change at various management levels including the CEO but even one or two levels below that which impedes focus and goal achievement.

    Advice to Management

Settle things down for awhile. Change is good but the amount of change is now leading to productivity and morale problems. Also, the Company seems to prefer hiring from the outside for talent versus a strong management development program. Some of this is because the Company has grown so quickly over the last couple of years but now there are a lot of people with 3 to 5 years tenure that are looking for career advancement. More focus on internal development for talent needs will improve morale and performance.

I worked at Biogen full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It had a thriving pipeline when I was there, but it is flat now.
My peers were smart, hardworking, and ethical, but, of course, they've all been laid off.

    Cons

Heartless cuts of nearly an entire department betrayed the true sentiments of executive management: we only care about the bottom line. We pretend to care about the other stuff.

    Advice to Management

    1) Value your reputation.
    2) No phony creeds or mission statements like, "Work fearlessly. Change lives."
    3) "Biogen 4.0" is in the toilet.

I worked at Biogen full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good science and great location in Cambridge. Modern office spaces and facilities are good. Genuine interest and concerns for patients.

    Cons

So many time I have heard "this is the Biogen way". Do not propose any changes, do not criticise processes or anyone who has been with the company longer than you have. You have only been employed to confirm the Biogen process is the best. When I joined I thought this the greatest company ever.... now "tightening the belt" means that all fun has gone. There used to be Newspapers, Christmas parties, monthly birthday cake celebrations, breakfast social meetings, brown bag training lunches, external meetings, training events and travel between sites to meet colleagues. All this has now stopped. Everyone now lives in fear for their jobs and keeping head down. In three years every person I have befriended has gone or been let go.

    Advice to Management

Be honest and have some fun. You employ people with brains and feelings not robots

    Good compensation
    World wide scope
Plenty of open desks, pick your favorite!

    Cons

    No stability
    Absent leadership
    Near continual reorganization
Chases stick price by laying people off to reduce OpEx and make things look better
Many high quality people let go/left

    Advice to Management

Show leadership. Truly appreciate employees rather than just say you do.

    Pros

Good pay & benefits. Flexible work time

    Cons

Frequent lay-offs. Strategy and vision are not communicated well throughout levels of the company, which leads to unengaged staff. Advancement is based more on who you know than what you do.

    Advice to Management

Provide better leadership and management training to supervisors, including 360 feedback.
