I have been working at Biogen full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great co-workers. Exciting science. Great chance to learn new skills and collaborate with others. Salary is nice. Great benefits. Flexible hours.

    Cons

Management doesn't know what they're doing. Typical corporate BS. Lots of captains. Not enough soldiers. They always complain that not enough is developed in house, but then they lay off a bunch of people and wonder why.

    Advice to Management

We could do fine with half of you gone.

    Pros

Great scientists: smart, helpful and collaborative
Great benefits: excellent 401K and vacation time, as well as a solid starting salary

    Cons

Recent uncertainty: a layoff in drug discovery in 2012 lead to massive rehiring. Since 2013, there were almost monthly reorganizations/title/department changes within drug discovery. After a banner year in 2014, employees were told to tighten their spending habits for changes ahead. This lead to another round of massive layoffs in 2015. The uncertainties regarding what was going to happen dropped productivity of everyone and lead to a lot of useless fear and speculation. After the layoff, there has been much confusion as to how the company will restructure itself. The layoff of personnel, although not random, was more arbitrary than not.

    Advice to Management

Lower management is doing fine. Upper management should come up with a vision and stick to it. Uncertainty leads to lower productivity.

    Pros

Up to date technology, good benefits and vacation, decent pay, decent cafeteria and gym.

    Cons

Coming in as a contractor it can take a long time to go from contractor to FTE. Often it seemed as if there was no rhyme or reason to promotions.

    Advice to Management

Interact more with the people below you. Make and effort to show your employees you care. Hire and give promotions based on work and attitude rather than seemingly randomly.

    Pros

Great work environment. Excellent resources to support world class research with some of the smartest scientist as colleagues. A lot of basic science research to support drug discovery programs. A very academic feel with almost daily seminars by academic professors. Environmental consciousness. Community outreach with programs like community lab, the Biogen foundation and support for NPR. Amazing benefits.

    Cons

Like all companies, business needs drive job security irrespective of the scientific importance
