Good perks but poor management and strategy

      12 Nov 2020 - Human Resources
      Recommend

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Thanks to small teams and underinvestment in hiring in certain areas, your scope is bigger than usual sometimes and you gain more experience than you might do elsewhere. Pockets of great management and genuinely committed leaders who are a pleasure to work for. Strong benefits package - not particularly innovative but competitive. Compensation packages varied in competitiveness but good. Generally the employee population is committed, friendly and open. Some wonderful people work there.

      Cons

The executive team. There appears to be little to no strategy (and when it did crop up, it was eternally changing) and the leadership didn’t attempt to motivate, understand or support the workforce. Instead, the go to appears to be rule by fear. This trickles down to lower management tiers who are taught that the same old school rude behaviour is acceptable. From an HR team perspective, there was no global strategy or any semblance of an attempt to work towards any kind of long term goal. Instead there was favouritism and subsequently a blind eye towards poor performance & sometimes genuinely obstructive behaviour if the person was in the right circle. There are some very hard working people in those teams who work to the bone, and in return are treated dismissively by leadership & expected to work seven days a week whilst their teams reduce due to attrition with no backfills granted.

10 Mar 2021 - Business Development Representative in London, England, England

      Business Outlook

      Pros

My team and others who work at BlackBerry are amazing - everybody is very supportive. The whole hiring process was very professional and prompt. The training structure is well thought out and organised. The products are high level and very interesting to learn more about. The culture and values are aligned with what I expected. Benefits Access to higher learning and courses Ability to progress if you wish

      Cons

Nothing comes to mind but the quality of colleagues means high standards.

      Pros

I really can't think of a single one

      Cons

Weak and unskilled SLT. They basically gaslight the staff and destroy self confidence in order to gain control. Lack of direction and very unprofessional.

      Business Outlook

      Pros

It was the people It was the culture It was the location It was the challenge

      Cons

The management team that knew what they were doing were driven out. Cylance acquisition has been botched - senior roles snapped up by folks who do not have the first clue about the market or the customers. Regional leadership is weak and just ‘Yes’ men. Confused marketing - how can the market know what BlackBerry are about if the staff don’t?

      A toxic dystopia

16 Sep 2020 - Senior Director in London, England, England
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Not many. Some people are nice.

      Cons

Everything. Toxic senior level management with no direction. John Chen is a hopeless leader who clearly doesn't understand the market or the simple fact that no one cares about the BlackBerry brand. No one. But the whole companies strategy is based on some whimsical recognition of a long irrelevant device. The Peter Principal is evident in nearly all levels of managers and directors. Cylance is just snake oil and the rest of the products are poor and below average. Managers and directors promoted over their abilities creating utter paralysis across the board.
