I have been working at Boston Consulting Group full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Interesting work & lots of travel

    Cons

Dont expect to have a socal life outside of work including weekends As a consultant, expect to spend your weekends doing work and when you may have a breather, then you need to do your own expense reports to claim back your own money (and which you will have to fight to get back) Go and join a technology company where business margins & salaries are better. And there is work...

    No Opinion of CEO

I worked at Boston Consulting Group full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I learnt a lot in my time at BCG, particularly how to analyse data and present insights. I have developed these skills in a way that I don't think would be possible in most other companies.

    Cons

The Knowledge Team track is challenging - progression can be slow, meaning that it may only be a medium term option for those who are super ambitious. However there is better work-life balance, and exit opportunities can still be attractive.

    Advice to Management

Provide a clearer path for progression for junior KT staff and/or a defined route to Expert Consultant Track.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Boston Consulting Group full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Interesting and varied project load, great people, work/life balance increasingly prioritized, decent compensation (taking into account work load), professional and structured approach to career development, great place to learn rigour and skills you'll need regardless of where you continue your career

    Cons

Common with short deadlines that drives long hours to satisfy partners' (or ambitious project leaders') promises to clients, a varied project load also leads to some (much) less interesting assignments, at times high travel load

    Advice to Management

Allow greater degree of specialization when consultants want this

I worked at Boston Consulting Group full-time for more than a year

    Pros

BCG is a tremendous place to build core competence on business fundamentals - from financial modelling to organisation design and capabilities. Most of all you learn the art of "corporate storytelling" - which is imperative for a career at a large company. Fantastic lifestyle, from flights to hotels, everything is designed to maximize your comfort to get the job done People around are highly intelligent and (even...

    Cons

Experienced hires - your previous experience is used more as a credibility builder for the firm, rather than an opportunity to leverage your knowledge and skills. Consulting people are part of a mold - and they push everyone to be the same. Work life balance is a big issue - 14 hours days are a minimum

    Advice to Management

Learn to understand and leverage knowledge and skills experienced hires bring

I worked at Boston Consulting Group full-time for more than a year

        Pros

Intelligent people Access to ideas and frameworks Free coke in cafe Some interesting travel Good formal trainings and continuing professional development available

        Cons

Limited interest in any purpose other than quarterly share-holder return for client Poor work-life balance Juniors and partners very good; middle management less impressive. Project managers don't have incentives to really develop their employees

        Advice to Management

Sometimes there is a tension between creativity and efficiency and BCG prioritises the latter. Middle managers are often bad people developers. Some project leaders showed excellence in this area but left, whereas others were very poor and still kept their jobs / got promoted. Work-life balance remains a problem. The problem for many is not the number of hours but the amount of uncertainty about hours - there could...

        Pros

Intelligent colleagues that challenge you each day to solve the most important problems for some of the biggest companies globally.

        Cons

Poor work/life balance although this is to some extent mitigated by internal programs

        Pros

The people are amazing Feedback culture helps you improve Executive level exposure straight out of university Launchpad into other careers

        Cons

One bad review can count against you for a long time At junior levels, the job involves churning out a lot of PowerPoint slides Industry growth depends on selling more "Transformation" projects, which are less exciting to work on than the strategy projects promoted in marketing materials Work / Life balance is poor, particularly in the Energy and PE practices

        Advice to Management

Keep it simple - be aware of the internal / external brand risks from moving too far down the chain.
