I worked at Brandwatch full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Brandwatch is a place that fosters creativity and talent, and goes out of its way to provide a modern and dynamic work place. If you are the kind of person willing to roll your sleeves up and get stuck in, to do whatever it takes to get things done with the highest quality, and brave enough to challenge things when you believe things can be better, then you will fly in this environment. It is not about being the smartest person, although their is a fantastic, almost intimidating, pool of young talent. Brandwatch is about being willing to contribute your best, and when mistakes do happen, their is no blame culture, only support. I have always been impressed with the level of support both personal and professional the company gives, qualities too often diluted in equally sized and larger companies. These factors have created an environment and a technology stack which is constantly in a state of change and evolution. This naturally brings other challenges, but the accompanying opportunities are met with open and willing vision if you can break ideas down clearly for upper management. In turn this has produced some genuinely cutting edge SaaS products. The willingness to regularly reevaluate itself, upgrade, invest in and refactor technologies where appropriate has provided products that will more easily maintain relevance and move with market changes. As an engineer, I personally have loved the willingness to experiment and explore technologies to find the competitive edges. This flexibility and financial trust allowed myself to design and build efficient and cost effective infrastructure using a mixture of open source and best of breed offerings.

    Cons

One of the hardest periods for any business which has been successful in receiving VC funding, after surviving the challenges associated with incredible rates of growth, is the period where a company must transition from a loss leader, into a financially viable business while still challenging and disrupting the market. Such a period of transition naturally imposes changes in culture and company dynamics that can be tough, but I have remained impressed with Giles Palmer's diligence towards his early values and resistance to the negatives of these changes. All in all, compared to other companies with similar success stories, Brandwatch has done a good job at keeping these growing pains to a minimum.
