    Pros

    - good people to work with - free food and alcohol - exams are paid for but there is a clawback clause

    Cons

    - lack of appreciation from management - clueless support structure - everyone leaves - pay is better elsewhere - don’t get rewarded for hard work you are just a number. - significant blame culture in the office with office politics. - lack of transparency between management and staff - empty promises -selling DFM lack of client interest and what’s best for them. Nobody bats an eye as long as the money is... coming in.

I have been working at Brewin Dolphin full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Brewin gives you the freedom to work in your own way, within reasonable limits. Career progress was in the past ad hoc but now more structured. Financial rewards are good but heavily bonus dependent. Working environment is largely friendly and relatively relaxed. Training for junior staff is good. Workforce diversity is improving.

    Cons

Training beyond essential exams is piecemeal. Out-moded attitudes die hard, as do out-moded staff. Mid-career progress is slow. Internal accounting structure can create unhelpful internal competition, is limiting to the business and not conducive to efficient client recruitment. Pension contribution is below industry average. IT systems are improving but remain a great source of frustration.

    Advice to Management

Review the PRC model. Be ruthless in letting go/retiring expensive senior staff who are no longer making a positive contribution. Introduce more structured, pro-active training post qualification - simply keeping up to date with regulation is not enough. Your staff can do and want to do more more but you must give them the tools - make it compulsory for progress if necessary. Create a system to give credit when... clients are passed on to more appropriate services/staff/localities. Stop accounting for IM and FP as different entities - charge clients one fee for us both and we'll work better together.
