    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at British American Tobacco full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Compensation and benefits along onboarding financial support for new hires are very good. Might change under the new CEO.

    Cons

Too traditional a business, short-sightedness in R&D, lack of visibility and career development plans, patchy HR and IT support. The HR in specific place among some of the worst I have ever dealt with. New CEO is bleeding the company dry for short-term returns, so expect no improvements in early 2020.

I have been working at British American Tobacco full-time

    Pros

Excellent pay and bonus, with good benefits. New products area is exciting and dynamic, offering the chance to learn and grow. London office has a good central location and decent canteen on site. Truly global company and atmosphere - colleagues come from every corner of the world and you work with many different markets.

    Cons

Most of the senior managers I've come across are shockingly poor leaders, lacking basic people skills. Their focus is purely on what their managers think of them and preparing slides for the next big management presentation. Little thought is paid to actually doing a good job, making improvements, the team they are managing, or even basics like saying hello and getting to know individual team members. Extremely... hierarchical. Decisions are made by committee and involve aligning with every single department, region, end market, which takes forever. Your job js less about doing things that create results and value for the company, but more about managing stakeholders and their fragile egos, This creates a very aggressive environment where people are overly pushy and step on others. Knowledge is used as power and as a way to get one up on other people and other departments. New categories is extremely disorganised - chaos ensues trying to align with R&D, Insights, and Brand teams. Certain high level managers are known for their abusive and disrespectful behaviour but nothing is ever done about this. Instead people walk around fearful of their next encounter and breathe a sigh of relief when he (and it's always a he) walks out the door or declines a meeting request. Functions like HR and IT are useless. There are supposed to be processes in place for things like setting objectives but it's all fake and useless when the team leader doesn't bother to do them for his line reports so in turn they don't care about setting objectives or giving feedback to their reports either. IT hopeless - new starters routinely don't have a laptop for their first 1-2 weeks so sit their reading print outs for their first weeks, a great welcome! Archaic expenses system where you have to send your receipts in an envelope that then gets sent to Romania for processing - excellent use of technology and environmental footprint. There are many examples like this where processes haven't been updated for decades and aren't fit for the modern age. Since so many people have been stuck there for decades they don't know any better.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the 'old boys club' and aggressive tone that is the prevailing culture. This will no longer cut it in the modern technology company you aspire to be/need to become to survive the downturn in cigarettes. You need to bring in and actually listen to outside talent with fresh ideas. Encourage people to change the status quo, at the moment everyone is scared of stepping outside the lines so they don't bother... to. Empower all levels to make decisions without several levels of hierarchy suffocating them.

I worked at British American Tobacco full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Invest on employee development. Opportunity to work abroad. Meet and work with people from around the world. Very diverse company

    Cons

Although salaries are OK, used to be more better. In some countries is becoming less competitive in some areas. If you want to grow, you must move to other countries. For some people, is a challenge.
