I worked at British Gas full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Relaxed but professional environment. Good benefits. Gym and staff restaurant on site.

    Cons

Still some 'hero' rather than team culture in IT delivery

    Advice to Management

There is some under utilisation of skills and sone very top down decision making. Encourage the best in people and support professional training plans and career development.

I have been working at British Gas full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great brand recognition and huge scale for progression and upwards mobility. Lots of offices and generally very flexible as an employer. Pay is generally good.

    Cons

Not growing and therefore constantly at risk of re-organisation. Strong negative staff feeling over the previous five years. Reducing benefits and difficulty in the sector.

    Advice to Management

Need to work on developing relationships with staff as they are at an all time low. Employee benefits and above average pay increases would be a strong way to show this.

I worked at British Gas full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

+ Reasonably good paying benefits (nearer the upper end of the market for similar roles)
+ Good opportunities for promotion (to a certain point/level if out with London/Staines)
+ They give you the tools to do the job effectively

    Cons

    - No room to realistically progress past a point (unless willing to move to London/Staines)
    - Bonus opportunity for L7 and above hinged directly to elements you have absolutely no control over
    - Too much dressing up and decorating/drawing crap on stuff (seriously, there's a balance between having a nice working environment and going overboard with half the nonsense they done)... dressing up (with face paint for halloween for example)... or maybe people weren't dressed up.. maybe I just worked with a lot of ugly people!!, at time it felt like the place were people got jobs when the circus left town..

    Advice to Management

Remember that it's an office we work in and some of the employees don't want to be part of the carnival - they just want to be able to get into work and crack on with the task(s) at hand! without the noise, disruption or distractions!!.. Look at being less London/Staines centric as by default you are restricting the opportunities to those who 'can' fill them and not necessarily those that should (or are best placed to!). A specific career path for technical experts and business analysts would be good as opposed to EVERYTHING being geared for team managers.

I worked at British Gas full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

you learn to become cold, indifferent and to stab someone in the back before they get you.

    Cons

BG is one of these places that just uses staff like fuel and doesn't really care for their career aspirations or there personal well being.

Career - they do not let people aspire to new rolls and give them new training, it is reserved for those who are management buddies. Everything is vampirised to the last degree, trying to gather training from one person. But that doesn't matter because as soon as you are passed usefulness they demote you and kick you back on the call centre. Unless you manage to jam your tongue up an upper managers rectum.

Personal - They cleverly try to get you to do more hours than necessary, don't make you aware of your rights and generally abuse you. I have personally seen a colleague unsupported and pushed because they weren't liked into a role that they cannot do and they hate, but don't worry they didn't get the chance to disagree because they drank themselves into an early grave. Entirely on the hands of management of customer relations, names can be given, witnesses provided.

    Advice to Management

there is no advice, they are all guilty together in it. I would advise, promote the talented and intelligent, dont promote your mates. Dont push staff into killing themselves.
