I have been working at British Gas full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Ok to work for, pay scales Ok for the job.

    Cons

Constant fear of job insecurity. Some people treated better than others. Some lazy staff constantly out smoking or on their mobiles which shouldn't be tolerated as there is private information available. Know some staff who check who lives at certain addresses. Extra payments made for 'reporting' staff to management knows as 'money in your pocket'.

    Advice to Management

Need a clear out of staff who take the proverbial with smoking/toilet breaks and stop creating an atmosphere of reporting other members of staff just for £30.

    Pros

not a lot, i met some great people and i'm still in contact with them, Good rate of pay for call centre positions.

    Cons

Internal recruitment is not 'open and honest', or based on ability, you are interviewed as if you have never even worked for the company
Forced to book holiday time over a year in advance
Stupidly poor work/life balance for those in a call center roll
Horrible atmosphere and miserable, fed up staff.
They want staff to sign a contract saying they will work till 10pm on weekdays also Sundays and bank holidays before they will issue a payrise
bonus payments reduced for silly reasons re compliance which is forever being changed without telling the staff.

    Advice to Management

make the managers sit on the phone and at least get to know the systems, too many have never even been on the phone and have no idea on the systems so how can they advise the advisors!!
Train all advisers to take different call types, when i was there i would see lots of my colleagues sat around waiting for calls when my call type was constantly on calls
Sort the bonus scheme out you used to be paid on sales but now only retention and the amount of direct debits you set up ,so bonus payments have dramatically reduced but advisors are still doing the same amount of work

    Pros

Decent wage, free fruit, free Cornflakes free tea, free coffee. Met some lovely people working here

    Cons

New management have come in, made hundreds of people redundant and within weeks of sacking them they realised those positions are actually needed and are now seeking replacement. They are also trying to change our contacts so that we have to work Sundays with no additional pay. Also want to open Xmas day which is shocking.

    Advice to Management

You wouldn't work on Xmas day so how can you expect us to

    Pros

Great basic salary + bonus every 3 months

    Cons

Too many targets to chase - Most managers seem to go by their own rules, so different teams get treated differently depending on the manager

    Advice to Management

If you talk the talk, walk it e.g. If you expect staff to have empathy, try begin that way yourself

I have been working at British Gas full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Not one besides I've met some amazing people, who are now being pushed out on a daily basis. Worrying times!!

    Cons

I've been here for 5 years an the changes in this place have been remarkable, from a vibrant place to work at to a nightmare. The attitude used by senior leaders is classed as bullying by many and length of service is frowned upon. The union are useless and spineless and any concerns have been shoved aside. Any new people who come in to the job are advising that the job is no where near as first advised! Before applying I would clearly advise you to think as the pressures of this job is endless!

    Advice to Management

This is British Gas! A household name ! Yet employees are treated like they are no value to the company. Where are your values gone when agents where advised you are the backbone of the company.

I worked at British Gas as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Lively environment, loving people, and just great place to be at! just dont mess it up in the interview and you will be all fine.

    Cons

food is expensive in the Canteen but its delicious, also if you dont get to work early might not find parking nearer to the main employee entrance.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the great work.

I worked at British Gas full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Theres always a lot going on, charity events, sports days, people coming round with buns and cakes that sort of thing.
Theres a real family feel to the place

    Cons

Very often you get the feeling that your face has to fit for certain roles, and people are more often not given jobs they do not deserve. The bonus stucture at times was frustrating, on occasions people would kick off and get their own way for a multiplier that they had no real justification to be given

    Advice to Management

One thing that always got on my nerves was the sight of management swanning off early on friday afternoons, to me this sent out the wrong message.
