    Pros

Good Training Facility's, work van and tools.
    Good co workers
Stable enough for future after 2020
    Share save
    And that's about it!

    Cons

Low wages not competitive at all...
Micro management, phone ringing every half hour
Poor development unless you agree with everything they tell you
    No trust
Forced overtime even though they say it's not!
No clear direction... we fit Meters but more concerned about sale leads!
    Very stressful working environment
Only ever get told about the negative things never get congratulated on the positive
    Union have no backbone

    Advice to Management

Put more trust in engineers, give credit to those who truly deserve it not just to those who play at it.

    Pros

    Plenty of support
    Company van
    Company pay for tools
    Good benefits schemes

    Cons

    Not competitive pay
    Management always expect more
    Unfair bonus scheme
    Work/life balance getting worse

    Advice to Management

Bonus scheme is set out to give you the least amount possible.

Average pay for smart metering at British gas is 23k

Competitors (Sse, OVO, Siemens) pay £28k+

Lovely teams of people to work with, nice enviroment

    Cons

Higher management make decisions with massive impact and give no thought to the bigger picture, you will always be just a payroll number.

    Advice to Management

Act on your own advice and be a peoples employer when making people redundant make sure you look at employees track record and try to keep the outstanding staff

    Negative Outlook

    Pros

Good training which is both interesting and fun. I was with a good bunch of lads at one of British Gas' many training academies. We resided in different hotels, all of which were of a good standard such as the Hilton etc. Good pension scheme.

    Cons

Performance monitored if you don't push boiler sales in an engineering role. You need at least one sale a month at British Gas' exorbitant ramped up price's which is virtually impossible. The employee 'PERKZ' discount scheme is a waste of time. The SEM in my area was an absolute bell end, and the DSEM was even more of one. Both of these managers have adopted a bullying approach to dealing with SEE's in their team. Both severely institutionalised which is what you can look forward to if you stay in the business for a longtime. Lunch breaks are restricted as you feel under pressure from a constant workload. A large part of the working day is spent waiting around for the Smart Meters to commission. You assume that you're gas safe at the end of the training, when really all that you've achieved is a city & guilds level 2 qualification, similar to GCSE level qualification expected from a 15 year old child. Very little opportunity to progress in the business, unless you fancy installing central heating or repairing boilers for the rest of you life. Don't be sold a dream from what you read in the job vacancy!

    Advice to Management

If you treated a member of the public in the same way you do your staff you would lose some teeth and have a couple of black eyes in no time.

I have been working at British Gas full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Pay is the only pro. There is literally nothing else. Avoid at all costs. Blah blah blah blah. It's truly an awful place.

    Cons

    Lack of training
Pressure from management and the office
    Customers are 90 percent scum
7 day in a row illegal call out rota
    Fitting meters that don't work
    Fixed bonus criteria

    Advice to Management

    You're all cretins. Just quit.

I have been working at British Gas full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Working hours are excellent, jobs are kept close to where you live unless they need help in other areas. Company Van so you dont pay anything to travel to work. Union helps with issues in the company and negotiates pay rises year after year.

    Cons

Some issues with getting hold of your manager by email or phone can be a little frustrating. System issues with equipment and jobs booked incorrectly by call center.

    Advice to Management

Continue to improve reliability of the current system in use and always look to improve the quality of service.
