I have been working at British Gas full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I was given the opportunity to work for British Gas in Smart Metering in 2015, fully trained with an apprenticeship, van, and tool provided from day one. Very well looked after with most of the equipment and tools needed to complete the work safely and in a timely manner. The business tries to live its core values and filter them down to the employees. Ok work life balance

    Cons

IT systems can be challenging, getting them resolved slow and difficult. Just a number too anyone higher than your manager a small voice in a large machine good ideas are slow to happen. Some performance target are a little dubious.

    Advice to Management

Take the time to lesson to the engineers and speed up the communication for both sides.

I have been working at British Gas full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    A lot of great benefits
    Tools, tablet etc all provided
Was really enjoyable for the first couple of years
Opportunity to earn more with standby and overtime

    Cons

It used to be enjoyable...but it’s now just all about getting boiler leads etc and so much micromanagement.
It used to be about fitting smart meters but it’s almost like the business is more focused on trying to sell products rather than meeting a mandate. Pay negotiations... we were promised a pay rise in April...it’s now almost a year on and nothing. The lowest paying company in the smart metering industry by far. Management don’t listen to the team and what is actually the issues out in the field. Also having to be in the van half an hour before your start time... unpaid! what’s that about? ‘End of day process’ which basically means instead of finishing on time, you finish an hour later. Other engineers taking advantage of end of day, which affects everyone else.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the engineers, every year it’s the same things that get brought up and nothing seems to get done. The moral of the workforce out in the field has taken a huge dip in the last year. Something needs to improve

I have been working at British Gas full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Working hours - good work/life balance
    Tools all provided

    Cons

    Jobs frequently booked in incorrectly
    Departments working against each other
Management do not listen to concerns of engineers, they are too focussed on targets
Job booking office do not understand or appreciate challenges that engineers face when on jobs
Despite claiming otherwise, all focus is on productivity when it should be on safety; meaning a certain amount of pressure when doing jobs
Inadequate training provided for area I was working in
Coaches often aren't available to offer support they should be there to offer
Engineers pressured to work past their finish time & not 'opt out'
    Poor job planning
Too much focus from management on figures/targets. More understanding needed of challenges faced on jobs
Treat staff poorly - they pay much less than the market rate for Smart work
Very little job security - company are not committed to retaining or upskilling staff

    Advice to Management

Listen to what engineers have to say - I have worked as a SEE for 12 moths and the team are all bringing up the same issues at team meetings that were being raised last year.

Micro management, phone ringing every half hour
Poor development unless you agree with everything they tell you
    No trust
Forced overtime even though they say it's not!
No clear direction... we fit Meters but more concerned about sale leads!
    Very stressful working environment
Only ever get told about the negative things never get congratulated on the positive
    Union have no backbone

    Advice to Management

Put more trust in engineers, give credit to those who truly deserve it not just to those who play at it.
