I have been working at British Gas full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Some fantastic leaders although senior management can be quite detached. Good bonus for those who work hard. But this too is having the goal posts moved. Good benefits. Good wage but extremely high pressured job.

    Cons

Continual change, often without embedding the change it’s moved on. A culture where if you don’t agree with a process or decision you’re deemed to be negative and this is held against you. Recently brought in an online management system for all HR and day to day tracking and it’s not fit for purpose. In extreme cases people’s wages are wrong after absences from work. HR centralised so very difficult to amend in a timely fashion. Often run on fear, and a very high pressured job.

I have been working at British Gas full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Work life balance. Nice, friendly atmosphere and people. Willingness to invest in change. Great employee benefits including generous pension contributions

    Cons

Complicated structure. Too much role duplication and lack of clarity on responsibilities. More people chasing updates than the people actually doing work to improve the business or customer experience. Unclear and changeable strategy

    Advice to Management

Review structure and recognise imbalances in resources. Spend time defining and being clearer on strategy for future growth and don’t change it every two years as new leadership teams come in

I have been working at British Gas full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Everything provided, good package, shares scheme and good pension

    Cons

Very pushy on sales, poor service turnaround and poor bonus scheme. Electrical engineers very isolated within teams since merging with gas services.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the customers needs first such as appointment times, availability and stop pushing engineers to find any sales opportunity possible. Engineers have to use an app for every job to find out what products a customer has to potentially push what they don’t have.

I worked at British Gas full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

When (not if) you end up suffering from extreme stress, staff could routinely take extended periods of time off work.

    Cons

Extremely stressful and repetitive. Every minute is monitored. Customers are furious and CSAs have no power to offer resolutions.

    Advice to Management

Treat your staff like humans not robots.
