I worked at British Gas full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

You have to respect those who can get away with killing someone...they did it 3 times with the help of the HSE, they tried to do it to me...

    Cons

Management...making the place full of stress and misery and still expecting a productive workforce

    Advice to Management

You are employing people with families not worthless numbers, only cowards bully but it is the main criteria to be a manager.

I have been working at British Gas full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very few: Dress down days; charity events.

    Cons

Only being paid for the time that you are logged into the phone; the palpable feeling of negativity as it is passed down from manager to employee; the low pay; the lack of opportunity to climb the ladder - I mean, come on! Give me one good why anyone wouldn't just see this as a stop-gap job and just leave as soon as they are able to!

    Advice to Management

    FFS! Wake up!

I have been working at British Gas full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

money ok. overtime available, if u want it.

    Cons

sell sell sell mentality of managers. management hierarchy poking the fella below him, and so on... They call it 'offering safety and efficiency advice' - afraid to utter it's true meaning - selling. veiled threats that you will be 'looked at' if your sales figures are in the lower ranks

    Advice to Management

Give your engineers a little more respect, THEY are the skilled qualified people and know how to do their job and keep customers happy.
Stop dictating the equipment that 'must' be used, when the engineer knows that a tool bag or tool box is far more practical, safer and fit for purpose than a tool roll where everything can't be contained and items fall out. not to mention the ridiculous amount of floor space required to unravel and access the tools.

I have been working at British Gas full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Working hours - good work/life balance
    Tools all provided

    Cons

    Jobs frequently booked in incorrectly
    Departments working against each other
Management do not listen to concerns of engineers, they are too focussed on targets
Job booking office do not understand or appreciate challenges that engineers face when on jobs
Despite claiming otherwise, all focus is on productivity when it should be on safety; meaning a certain amount of pressure when doing jobs
Inadequate training provided for area I was working in
Coaches often aren't available to offer support they should be there to offer
Engineers pressured to work past their finish time & not 'opt out'
    Poor job planning
Too much focus from management on figures/targets. More understanding needed of challenges faced on jobs
Treat staff poorly - they pay much less than the market rate for Smart work
Very little job security - company are not committed to retaining or upskilling staff

    Advice to Management

Listen to what engineers have to say - I have worked as a SEE for 12 moths and the team are all bringing up the same issues at team meetings that were being raised last year.
