I worked at British Gas full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Salary/Package was decent - Backed up with correct procedures to ensure you where paid appropriately and if made redundant where compensated accordingly

    Cons

Work ethics/Clique management/jobs for the boys culture/Look after their own even when the individuals are doing as good a job as others

    Advice to Management

Reward on quality and effort - Do not be blinded by loyalty

I have been working at British Gas full-time

    Pros

Team members and managers are generally great to get along with. Opportunity to have great conversations with our customers. Best reward scheme I have ever been a part of in a contact centre. Company really look after you when you are off sick.

    Cons

Certain targets are unrealistic and some internal company procedures can be really stressful. Also no real opportunity for career progression.

    Advice to Management

Understand that different employees have different skillsets and utilise these proactively for the benefit of the campaign instead of having everyone doing the exact same thing which creates sub-optimal results. Garner a more thorough understanding of your employees and what drives them allow more freedom to initiate change from the ground up; not the top-down.

I have been working at British Gas full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The strategy is very much around the customer. If we can change to meet customers requirements then the future is bright. Hive is a massive benefit in the “internet of things” with over 1 million installs.

    Cons

An old monopoly with too many people who remember the “good ol days” when it was a monopoly and the customer had no say or choice. Get in the real world. Having worked at many other organisations I can tell you all you have it made.

    Advice to Management

Keep pushing the change as it is needed .

Current Employee - Smart Energy Manager in London, England

I have been working at British Gas full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Flexible working hours, company car with private use. Can work from home when not required to attend or host meetings

    Cons

Very limited earning potential for managers. Engineers can earn far more than manager. Senior leaders constantly changing the areas of focus. Difficult to motivate engineers as bonus schemes are ineffective at driving the right behaviours, and actually do the opposite.

    Advice to Management

Allow front line managers who are technical to keep a van and complete call out/overtime if they wish to maximise earning potential. Give managers more power to offer financial incentives for direct employees who are productive and not pay contractors double to salary of direct employees.
