I worked at British Gas (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Money, money and money plus money again money nothing more than money

    Cons

First Managers allowed to intimidate/bully & harass with no comeback unless your 'one of he boys'!
Managers allowed to lie and the dispose of evidence but are not made accountable!
Don't even bother with expecting any help from the GMB unless your part of the old blue eyed boy network. Don't waste your money joining because if your ever dismissed on TRUMPED up charges the chances are because they are so close/afraid of the managers they won't want to help you when it matters!,
    YOU HAVE BEEN FORWARNED!!!!!!!!
Company 's system in total chaos (FACT)

    Advice to Management

A David Young sent a message to all in S &R at the beginning of the year talking about change! Guess what Mr Young I can confirm to you that I was told vast quantities of what you said was not believed at Regional manager level, so I'm afraid your message is getting to those it was aimed at!!!

I have been working at British Gas full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Tools supplied from hand tools to testing equipment and laptop technology which can be used in conjunction with experience to diagnose faults

    Cons

Constantly using different performance measures which victimises their engineering staff, leading them to chase unachievsble targets. This is having such self destruct effect throughout the company.

    Advice to Management

Lose the micro management approach, start trusting people, be more family friendly to engineers (as you do to office staff) that will ensure we want to promote the company, not out of fear from dismissal from a poor performance (doing a good job that doesn't recall and customers satisfied rather than shut it down within 70min target with no parts as this affects performance even though you have no control over cost and your work locations type of job)

There are no pros to working at British gas. If you love doing nothing but selling a product to customers who pay a fortune for nothing then this is the place for you.

    Cons

Still some 'hero' rather than team culture in IT delivery

    Advice to Management

There is some under utilisation of skills and sone very top down decision making. Encourage the best in people and support professional training plans and career development.

I have been working at British Gas full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Salary, holiday, summer shifts. Share schemes if you want to save for 5 years and make nothing.

    Cons

Winter shifts, wastefulness, sales pressure, corner cutting, micro management, awful union, poor old school management, stupid bonus schemes.
You are expected to sell, this is priority number one. The management will say safety is number one but in reality they force you to cut corners on safety to meet job times but wait to ruin you if you get caught.
They monitor everything, the business are paranoid the engineers are not being fully wringed out so they spend an absolute fortune on monitoring every aspect of everything, it is stifling and has ruined virtually every engineers morale. The manager / engineer relationship is akin to a prisoner / warden.
There is a good bonus you can hit if you can either ignore faults or pass your expensive parts onto colleagues....it is time based so reward those who fail to do a proper job.
Big, bloated organisation with greedy, clueless management. The union are a complete joke, totally in the pockets of management, occasionally may get an email saying they disagree with something but that's about as militant as they get.
Very few current engineers can see the business here in 3 years and most are leaving as the company is clearly aiming to take the contractor route.

    Advice to Management

Stop treating engineers as annoying grease monkeys, customers come to Bg for them to fix their boiler, not for the white collar army who make a report on how many times that engineer went to the loo!

I have been working at British Gas full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good salary, good benefits... (Qdos) good shifts in the summer, horrendous in the winter, some good engineers work here. Struggling to find anymore pros

    Cons

British Gas are only interested in sales, as soon as you get into a customers house they expect you to flog something, preferably a Hive. It's sales 1st then repair the appliance 2nd. Obviously some customers have had enough with 400k leaving in the first 6 months of this year. It's not just the customers who have had enough though, the bully boy techniques and micromanagement have taken a toll on the work force too, as many engineers have left this year (including myself at the end of the year) the GMB union don't care and don't do anything, too much in BG's pocket.
It's a well paid job but simply isn't worth the stress. Such a shame as it used to be a great place to work. Now it's just toxic. Counting down the days to when I leave.

    Advice to Management

Stop with the micromanagement, treat employees as people and not money making drones. Communication is very poor, morale rock bottom, the management don't realise as they are so out of touch. Greedy shareholders are ruining BG and it's brand.
