I worked at British Red Cross full-time for more than 8 years

      Pros

+ Committed and passionate front-line staff & volunteers.

      Cons

      - Frequent in-fighting in senior leadership, with the humanitarian objectives ignored in favour of empire building. - An extremely weak understanding of technology across the organisation, resulting in £millions wasted on failed projects. - IT infrastructure has been awful for years, frequently leaving front-line staff without access to core systems. - Transparency is non-existent with leadership seemingly terrified...

      Advice to Management

= Value your workforce. You need them, but they don't need you. If every one of the leadership team stopped working tomorrow, then the work of the Red Cross would continue. = Serve your teams, don't dictate to them. You are beholden to the service users via your staff, not to some executive above you. = Get a grip on how you can influence the organisation. You appear to be fumbling and guessing your way through...

I worked at British Red Cross part-time for more than a year

      Pros

Good annual leave, free tea and coffee.

      Cons

Everything else. Highly bureaucratic, wasteful with money, bullying culture.

      Advice to Management

Sort out bullying culture, stop trying to pretend you are right about everything.

I worked at British Red Cross full-time for more than a year

      Pros

      - The people: fun, friendly, approachable and helpful - Annual leave: 28 days allowance and office shut down for Christmas and New Year - Working hours: Monday to Friday (08:30am - 4:30pm or 9am - 5pm), early finish bank holidays

      Cons

      - Training: I had very little training which made it difficult for me to settle into the role and be an asset to the team I was working in - Salary is on the low side

      Advice to Management

      - Provide more comprehensive training for new starters - Be more supportive when someone speaks up because they’re struggling with the job

I have been working at British Red Cross full-time

      Pros

Working in the centralised People and Learning Function in Paisley. Great benefits such as flexible working and lots of autonomy. Genuinely lovely people working in the organisation. Interesting work. Very diverse organisation.

      Cons

Organisation going through transformation so always issues when change is implemented, but really good vision of what will be offered.

      Advice to Management

Listen and value everyone's opinion, encourage people to speak out and offer ideas/different viewpoints.

I worked at British Red Cross for more than 3 years

      Pros

They give you a salary - though not competitive.

      Cons

White middle class only thrive. Surprisingly clueless practices in place. Shocking acceptance of poor standards. Applaud themselves for mediocrity and retro thinking.

      Advice to Management

I worked at British Red Cross full-time

      Pros

Very strong purpose and moral core. Exceptionally committed front line staff. Strong commitment to change to free up more resources for delivery of services. World class in an emergency

      Cons

London office feels remote from the front line. Internal machine doesn't work so well day-to-day

I worked at British Red Cross full-time for more than a year

      Pros

Fantastic group of people working at BRC who are all committed to helping those in crisis in the UK and abroad. Really good training and skills development, good annual leave and toil policy. When an emergency like the UK terror attacks occurred in 2017, all staff across the organisation in every part of the country pulled together.

      Cons

Stagnant Manager roster, some people have been there too long! Poor consideration and etiquette for workload of junior colleagues at officer and assistant level. Lack of progression and career building opportunities for junior staff, with many leaving the organisation (lack of level 4/senior officer roles) so difficult for junior staff to progress as the manager positions are too out of reach. Need to consult staff on...

      Advice to Management

You clearly aren’t gonna leave anytime soon as most of you seem like lifers, so make the experience of junior staff pleasant.
