      Pros

Great work environment, and a genuinely creative body of knowledge. One can learn a lot at Buro Happold, and landing a job there at the beginning of one's career is great. You will develop great skills and be involved in projects that are genuinely interesting. Given that their recruitment policy is a disaster, and they under-resource every job, this also means that those with initiative can take on a lot of responsibility at a level that would be unthinkable elsewhere. There is little resistance to good ideas, regardless of where they come from, so even junior employees can contribute to the success of projects.

      Cons

The management of the company is stuck in the 1970s. Staffing policy is: hire three for the job of five, make them work for five, charge the client for five, and pay them for two. Burnout is common, and opportunities for promotion nigh on non-existent. Unsurprisingly, many junior engineers leave as soon as they get chartered, taking their knowledge with them. Lucky is the company that employs them subsequently, because they will shine. At the mid-senior level, promotions are basically achieved by leaving to go to another company, as there isn't even the structure in place to foster career progression. Asking to discuss salary and career progression are actually two good ways to ensure that one is never promoted. The point about under-resourcing above remains valid here, though: engineers will often work way above their pay grade with neither the salary nor the recognition, which is a shame.

Good for your CV if you come from a small company.

      Pros

Some nice projects Good for your CV Some really good engineers to learn from (unfortunately they are not running the MEP teams) Central office in London in a nice area

      Cons

They don’t help you to develop yourself as engineer and manager. Low salaries and if you join with a better salary then you have only 2% raise or less per year. Engineers/Seniors asked to do a lot of technician work. Huge rotation and many people are leaving ATM (is happening every 2 years). No engineering training. They have management training but it is very difficult to get these courses even if it is a target in your appraisal from your line manager. Poor MEP management/ leadership in London office. Asking you to work in projects without booking on these projects and then they challenge your work efficiency (book always on what you have worked). A lot of politics within the company.

      Pros

Friendly community, good offices, good facilities

      Cons

‘Old boys club’ mentality still restricting anyone who isn’t white and male from succeeding without considerable burnout. Lack of respect for non engineering staff.

Thanks so much for taking the time to write a Glassdoor review. We're glad that you're really enjoying working with us and I agree, we've got some great colleagues. I note your comment that there might not be as many experienced professionals to graduates, but hopefully as we develop stronger communication methods that support our graduates and tacit learning even while working remotely, you can feel even more supported.

Great projects and teams. Unnecessarily stressful and pressured.

      Pros

Team atmosphere is supportive and people are great to work and socialise with. The projects are diverse and rewarding. Big ideas to move the company and industry forward do sometimes appear from the top.

      Cons

Company culture runs deep- working late happens a lot, part time work is still seen by some as someone being difficult, boundaries are difficult to set, some middle management is backward looking, the emphasis on timesheets and utilisation is unnecessarily stressful.

      Graduate Engineer - Interview Process

      Mar 1, 2021 - Graduate Engineer

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - Clear and easy communication from HR - Clear instructions on the interview process and presentation The interview was set up by HR. It was between two managers/senior engineers and myself. I was set the task of preparing a 10 minute presentation followed by the interview and questions. This was by far the best/easiest remote interview process I have experienced. Everything was very organised.

      Cons

NO cons at all but I would suggest being able to discuss salaries separately after the original offer has been sent. Many people find it awkward to discuss salaries so this might make it easier.
