I worked at Côte Restaurant part-time for less than a year

    Pros

A beautiful restaurant. Elegant in every way. In the evenings, when the tables are candlelit, the restaurant has a magical atmosphere. Free food. A lot of responsibility to manage - you are effectively the catalyst that allows the entire restaurant process to occur. This creates a very high energy environment, which can often be motivating and fun! If you can thrive on the energy and pressure this job will give you, it can serve as a very good part-time or full-time service job. Even for those without experience. The commis waiter is the least senior member of the service team. Thus, you are treated as such, this can be rewarding when you are able to perform your duties without issue and watch the restaurant run smoothly before your eyes.

    Cons

Absolute minimum wage. Service charges (tips) are only awarded to you through a point-based system. Chefs can be often aggressive and hostile in their interactions. This creates a high pressure environment in the kitchen. Pressure can be a good motivator though. You have to make sure every minute detail in the restaurant is perfect, and being at the bottom of the restaurant's food chain, it can be very stressful to manage. The restaurant delivers authentic French fine dining experience, but at a low price. I feel that this is at the expense of the service staff - particularly the chefs and the commis waiters - who have to deliver a high-class dining experience, to lay food out on the plate beautifully like a work of art... and in my opinion are not praised enough for it. in my eyes, sometimes it feels like the job of the commis waiter is all the emotional labour and pressure that comes with high-class dining but without the actual class.
