    I have been working at Cabinet Office full-time

    Pros

    Good current technology, opportunities to work at the heart of Government, very close to ministers/senior officials.
    Current bonus is the exciting political context of Brexit and General Election.
    Lots of very smart and dynamic colleagues keen to make an impact.

    Cons

    Pay is lower than some parts of Government and it can be unfair when someone transfers in from a higher paying department (e.g. HMRC) to do the same job as a CO employee.

    Pros

    Flexible working
    Reputation
    Nice laptop
    Nice Parliament Street office with canteens

    Cons

    Diversity is lacking
    Short notice deadlines (less than 2 hours at times)
    Poor management (some managers have poor interpersonal skills and are not 'born to lead')
    Poor communication between teams across Cabinet Office
    Lack of transparency about how things are done and who people are (you could be talking to a senior and you wouldn't even know because some people avoid using their email signature)
    A lot of work for relatively low pay

    Advice to Management

    Familiarise yourself with your teams and their working environments.
    Be respectful of your employees' time - understand that they have lives outside of work and cannot jump to meet deadlines that you have poorly planned.
    Tell staff across Cabinet Office to engage with eachother about issues - at the moment you are facilitating a culture of 'escalation' before things have been discussed between staff at the same level and this is a breeding ground for contention and ill feeling.

    Pros

    The Faststream allows you to easily gain experience across a range of departments in short period of time. Good opportunities to build a cross government network and determine where you wise to specialise.

    Cons

    Quality of placements are questionable, some can be great, others can be terrible. You have little to no ability to move placements and although preferences are collected in terms of location and development needs, these seem to go out of the window during an opaque posting matching process. With this process despite being able to identify where you wish to specialise, you are unable to source placements that will allow you to hone these skills which is frustrating, especially considering the length (4 years) of the programme

    Advice to Management

    Listen to the users, Civil Service Resourcings stubbornness and inflexibility to change is driving talent out of the civil service. Retention figures highlight this and do not apply the generalist process to specialist schemes

    Interesting work - involved in major policies that affect the country.

    Cons

    Pay is vert poor, even for public sector. Most policy work is undertaken by very high grades.

    Some high profile work, centre of government

    Hierarchical, no career development, hiring people into roles that are too junior for them, bullying senior managers

    Pros

    Some areas of the Cabinet Office are amazing - interesting work, great supportive teams, amazing people, empowering and inspiring leaders

    Cons

    But some areas/aspects are bad - long hours, no learning and development, weird performance management system, loads of processes. Pay compared to other departments isn't great either.

    Also, getting a promotion is super hard. Since my boss has left I have taken on their responsibilities and I am getting great praise, but I have heard a load of excuses on why they can't actually promote me. Its disheartening and is making me look elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

    Retention in the Cabinet Office is bad! Promotions might help that as I am looking elsewhere for somewhere that pays me what I deserve for the higher grade role I have been doing.

    Fascinating policy areas and exciting to work at the heart of governement with some inspiring people

    Cons

    Lack of diversity at top management. Extremely poor corporate services. Pay not high enough for the responsibility or hours put in.
