OK For Now - But I Don't Trust Them

      Pros

Company has been more than fair during COVID which is commendable and much appreciated. Flexible working by local agreement if you're operational staff - essential for those with young families. Company car - for now. Double-matched employer pension contributions - for now. Decent overtime arrangements for staff - for now. Mon-Fri '9-5 type' working - for now. Dependable annual pay increases/bonuses so long as you at least 'mostly achieve' your performance objectives - for now. Generally, if you keep your head down you get left alone.

      Cons

Company seems to be on a continuous mission to cut costs, or to use their corporate buzzword - transformation. We're told "the pennies are running out" (actual quote from a senior manager) as an explanation/excuse for cost-cutting, but everyone can see the company makes hundreds of millions in operating profits each year. Translation: the owners only care about maximising profits and hundreds of millions is not enough. What this has meant for the employees of Cadent is a systematic erosion of pay and conditions over the last few years since TUPE protections ended, and it shows no signs of stopping. New T&Cs have been implemented for staff and field force (known as 'Cadent G' and 'Cadent S') that are seen by almost everyone to be inferior to historic T&Cs. Not that they don't get a reasonable paycheque, but the company now has them available all days of the week, most hours of the day, more hours a week than before, lower rates of overtime and a much lower chance of earning overtime in the first place. It's not quite 0-hours, but it's a hybrid of that model and is designed to give total flexibility to the company at the expense of the work-life balance of it's employees. They said it was to "meet future challenges", but conversations off-the-record demonstrate it was about much more than that. For insatnce, it almost completely eliminates enhanced overtime earnings whilst at the same time allowing the company to force up to 2hrs each day of extra 'flex-up hours' at super short notice and paid at a flat rate rather than an uplift like before. It was conceived when senior managers saw that some of the 'field force' were able to earn more than they did by working really hard within the old T&Cs - terms that were made up of decades of iron-clad union deals and arrangements from better days under National Grid. So now Cadent only offers new contracts on these new T&Cs and we're at about 40% of the workforce. What I'm scared of is that once a critical mass is reached, whatever that percentage is, Cadent will use that fact (and probably also the worn-out COVID excuse) to force these inferior terms on all remaining employees. Looking at what's been happening at other big companies recently (e.g. British Gas, BA etc.), I worry Cadent will employ the same 'fire and re-hire' tactic to force these terms on remaining staff. The workforce is mostly split between young people and over 55s - the over 55s will just do one if forced and enjoy their final salary pensions, leaving a dangerous skills and knowledge vacuum. But the rest who have mortgages 'til they're 70 and young families will have no option but to sign their life away. When that happens, all the pros I listed above will be under threat and I will hate my job and be trapped. I do not trust Cadent not to do this and feel it's more a case of when than if. I hope I'm wrong, but all the signs and rumours point to me being right.
