      Fun Retail Environment

      Pros

Working at Canadian Tire was an enjoyable experience as a teenager. It's a good job for first timers.

      Cons

As with all retail, you deal with the best and worst of today's society. Some days it seems everyone is in a good mood and vice versa.

Exciting work but always an overhanging shadow of staff cuts

      Pros

I joined the company at the exciting time when the company had recently signed some major sports partnerships which meant the whole company was galvanised around these partnerships and the upcoming winter Olympics.

      Cons

It seemed that the wider team was routinely culled, employees were 'let go' on a regular basis (very 2-3 months) it seemed the main motive for this was to keep the rest of the team on their toes.

Could be good but unfortunately mgmt tends to spoil these retail atmospheres

      Pros

      - Lots of room to grow (if the atmosphere allows it) - Good team work - Good exposure to customer service industry

      Cons

      - Hours suit the company better than the employees, as do most decisions - A false sense of security and generally unrewarding, despite title of "essential" - Pronounced favoritism (more of a location thing) - Management tends to be hit or miss depending on location with higher ranks consisting of more dismissive/power tripping individuals, though again, it really depends on the location. Some managers are transparent and easy going, others seem to create toxic environments and spread negative vibes. It can get so bad that employees will actively discuss these negative vibes behind the scenes in fear that addressing these concerns could lead to a dismissal or distortion of events. - Lack of recognition for positives with more focus on things you did wrong.

      My Experience

      Pros

Great Co-Workers to meet. Its laid back and not as fast paced as some retail companies.

      Cons

No Training what so ever, had to learn from co-workers. No room to move up in the corporate ladder. Have seen people try and not move up at all.

It's what you would expect from a retail job.

      Pros

Often good colleagues & occasionally great managers, generally you got a list of tasks to complete before end of day which made days somewhat predictable. Overall you will learn a lot & probably have some pretty good times mixed in with bad times.

      Cons

Low pay in regards to what you're expected to put up with, lunch rush, rude customers, occasional abusive managers. You may be expected to stay & work late with no notice, you may be expected to cover for multiple departments alone at the same time. Your list of daily tasks is often impossible to complete & has not been completed in a single day for a very long time, despite this management will act surprised & disappointed that you didn't complete everything on the list (while also serving customers, providing support, going on breaks, selling items, checking stock, etc.).
