I have been working at Capital One full-time

    Pros

    - People tend to be very nice and smart - A very relaxed and slow paced work environment, noticed is ideal for parents - Is possible to change teams from Web to Services to Mobile, etc.

    Cons

    - If you plan on doing exciting work, this might not be the place for you. Projects sometimes can be a little bit bland and move quite slowly

    "A Disappointing Experience"

    1.0
Current Employee - Software Engineer in London, England

I have been working at Capital One full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Good work/life balance. - Great office and equipment. - Regular fully-expensed trips to Nottingham.

    Cons

Upon joining you quickly become mired in endless planning and scrum ceremonies, bookended by talks on numerous corporate initiatives. Unworkable requirements are simply passed to teams from stakeholders in Nottingham who have remarkably little understanding of the teams in London. Inexperienced managers must then wrestle with these to try and eke out deliverables for stakeholders wedded to unrealistic deadlines. The graduate scheme is large and there are a limited number of developers able to support them in their development, adding additional pressure on teams. If you’re looking to grow as a developer I would simply avoid working here. Although Capital One does have good initiatives for learning and development, these can’t make up for the total lack of time spent actually building software.

I have been working at Capital One full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    * Work life balance is good. Flexible 9-5 hours * Compensation is OK * Friendly people

    Cons

    * Work is very dull, not interesting and filled with horrible corporate process and red tape. As a result, you won't be able to learn much as an engineer. * Engineers in london are not given the same support as the Nottingham counterparts. * Performance management is completely unfair. You are not rewarded on you're technical ability and delivery but on how well you sell yourself to senior managers. * HR is very unhelpful, non responsive and their only interest is to protect the company. * Hiring is also very biased as well. Again people who are all talk but no substance get hired while actual talented engineers are not taken into consideration. This results in many hires having imposter syndrome.

I have been working at Capital One full-time

    Pros

London offices are amazing, IT kit offered is top notch and people are great. Salary is OK and there is a lot of flexible working ability.

    Cons

To me it feels that it is not a technology company. It is a credit card company using technology in their specific way to achieve their goals. There is nothing wrong with that statement. The question is whether you want to work in a highly bureaucratic technology team full of controls and checks where the main priority feels to be defensive which results to very slow cycles of work. The fact they use AWS is a great thing. The fact that there are processes requiring people to make requests and wait for days to be approved by various teams in various timezones is not great and makes people feel demoralised and frustrated. Privileges are locked down to the minimum which again makes work slow. All these may come down to regulations and rules of the industry. Induction for new joiners is poor. A set of computer based training taking the first couple of days of the new joiner which feels so impersonal and dull for a fresh starter. Literally the first and only thing you do for days is to complete these trainings and create tens of requests for setting up access for your account. There are also 3 old-school induction days that take place in Nottingham where the offices have a restaurant, gym and it is next to the main train station.

I have been working at Capital One full-time

    Pros

The benefits offered are among the best available for the area. You get 10% time to learn or work on something that interests you. You have access to many online courses and books plus a wide community of developers. Great facilities really good canteen with multiple meal options every day. As a software engineer you get the latest MacPro, wide monitor, standing desk, unlimited coffee and a really comfy chair. A good work life balance flexible to accommodate most child care commitments. Management encourage associates to get involved in corporate responsibility events.

    Cons

Getting used to all the acronyms will take you a few months (but there is always someone willing to help!) No parking available on site for most associates. On the other hand, support for travel to work is good e.g. NCT, Tram, cycle.

I have been working at Capital One full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    - Great work environment (open plan, WFH, on-site gym, complimentary refreshments, frequent 'fun' activities, agile practice) - Lots of encouragement to learn new technologies and present novel solutions - Modern software and hardware provided (Cloud, OSS, MS Surfaces, MBPs, GSuite) - Good remuneration for the area - Great opportunities for growth within the company (vertically or horizontally)

    Cons

    - The Collaborative and Agile practices may take readjustment for some new starters - Still a slight disconnect between London and Nottingham offices - No active GAYE scheme
