I worked at Cengage full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

-The degree of autonomy in my day-to-day projects. -The variety of work briefs. -Favourable chance of debate in many meetings. -Opportunities for travel. -Training in most recent years. -Ability to change process within my team. -Good humour and caring culture within my team. -First organisation I’ve worked with where all staff know the money/figures and future plans of the business. For a non-sales person this was hugely welcome.

    Cons

There is an approach from *some* longer-serving sales-focussed leaders that process and campaign ideas cannot change 'because that's the way we've always done it'. This unwillingness is taught as a bad habit to new starters. It is more than frustration for a Comms team with decades of experience. I have no immediate answer for how the re-educate the business units —simply to keep chipping away. Refresher courses/CPD would have saved team time in the long run.

    I worked at Cengage full-time

    Pros

Good people - very friendly and supportive Good place to start a career Great work/life balance and reasonable hours

    Cons

Terrible progression - no opportunity whatsoever to progress within the company. Management had a tendency to give increasingly bullish demands with very little compensation - monetary or otherwise No flexible work arrangements Very low salary compared to others in the same industry The industry is dying and no-one will admit it - sales go down and management become worried and expectations of the staff go up which is unfair

Global scale and reach in the edtech space Supportive colleagues Digital focus Interesting products and projects to get involved with

Silos between the company business units - so not enough interaction and exchanging of ideas between the core Higher Ed business and the other two businesses that come under the umbrella of Cengage Learning

I worked at Cengage full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great content, which is recognized by the academic community. Large portfolio of databases & supporting technology. One of the few publishers that has both content and technology across all disciplines.

    Cons

Service strategy non existent, poor employee empowerment (decisions are not taken timely and all pass senior management). Endless stream of emails as result of lack clear division of responsibilities towards customers and lack of structured approach to service management. Little customer support resources available.

    Disapproves of CEO

    I worked at Cengage

    Pros

A good work-life balance--in that you can leave at 5pm. On a personal level, many of the employees are very friendly and fun to chat to. It is a fast-growing company, which is a bit of a double-edged sword; on the one hand, there's plenty to do, but on the other, there aren't enough people to do it. Apart from that, there's not much to recommend it.

    Cons

Management will happily mislead junior employees regarding their career prospects, and then fail to respond appropriately to complaints and grievances; pay is very low for junior positions; the company has a high turnover of senior management who don't seem to care much about the concerns of employees, which leads to a lot of people in more junior positions leaving because they are not offered career advancement opportunies and are not recognised for the work they do. Some of the middle managers are absolutely terrible managers (though good at other aspects of their job) and have no clue what the people beneath them do.
