I have been working at Chevron for more than a year

    Pros

    - 9/80 work week was AWESOME - everything is ergonomic, and they really care that you are comfortable - people are very open and willing to speak and network with interns - since I was in San Ramon, I got to meet and interact with some of the head big wigs of the company, which was awesome as an intern! - excellent work-life balance as an intern - very nice, inclusive culture - all employees have an incentive to be nice to each other because of the way that performance ratings are done at the end of the year - supervisor was very open and willing to listen to my concerns/complaints about the company and my internship experience; she provided guidance to me to help me better understand what I really want out of my career and where I can find that both in Chevron and outside of Chevron

    Cons

    - they do not custom develop anything in-house - very bureaucratic environment, which makes it difficult to get stuff done - interns get solo projects that no one else wanted to do - to second that, interns do not get a real taste of what it's like to work there because they do not work on a real team project - the company wasn't very helpful in finding housing for interns, which was stressful and expensive - if your supervisor gives you a dull project, you might not have a good chance of getting a full-time offer since your project didn't have enough "meat" in it, which is totally not your fault

I worked at Chevron for more than a year

    Pros

Chevron overall makes accommodations for a safe workplace, with sit/stand desks for everyone. They SAY they want everyone to speak up, and SAY they are inclusive of all ideas. Their mission statement is admirable, if only it were true and applied to IT projects.

    Cons

They actually are very hierarchically and politically structured. Also, in the Information technology projects, the management is skewed across several groups. There is no one person accountable for project personnel. Thus, power plays and bad behaviors go unchecked. Contractors report to one person, who does not have in-depth knowledge of all of the projects. Project managers report to another person. Employees working on the project report elsewhere. And at the top of the group, managers are told only what project managers and staff want them to hear. If you report gaps in the project and you might find yourself out the door. There is a constant stress because Chevron has been laying off employees in the downturn of the oil industry. Employees don't feel secure, and contractors know they are only there for the length of a contract, although Chevron can, and does, terminate contracts early.

Awesome 401k match, plenty of learning and development opportunities, management are readily available for communication, company cares about your health

    Cons

Oil industry is going under so there are major cuts happening in too many parts of the company. Unsure about the future.
