    Cons

Constant layoffs Old middle management not in tune with needs of silicon valley employees NOBODY wants to move to Houston!

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to the limited retention of young employees.

    Cons

    - Significant amount of unconstructive politics at mid-manager levels. - Given current O&G industry challenges, job opportunities are scarce and employees are in job survival mode rather than career development mode.

    Advice to Management

    Pros

Horizontal structure--everybody is approachable and willing to help. You don't have to worry about being intimidated by your seniors, since they put hierarchy aside. Opportunities are also abundant that you can shift from one career track to another. Work-life balance is embedded in the culture.

    Cons

Their processes need a lot of streamlining, since it is traditional in approach. A lot of cost saving measures lately.

    Advice to Management

    I worked at Chevron

    Pros

Strong positive values and culture. Large global company offers good opportunities (longer-term). Oil & Gas (principal business) offers broad, complex and interesting challenges to work on. Good company to work for longer-term.

    Cons

Large global company that's highly federated. Very slow to get things done, very bureaucratic. Oil & Gas industry downturn currently putting thousands out of work with lay-offs/redundancies and the work environment has currently become a lot more political and negative.

    Advice to Management

You're losing a lot of skilled, knowledgeable, loyal employees through the downturn. Consider strategies to re-engage some of these people as you inevitably move back to growth.
