I have been working at Ciena full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

they pay pretty well and generally look after their salespeople
The company is generally doing well and under pretty good sir leadership
The cluture is pretty good it's like being in the family when you are there

    Cons

North American centric, can be less understanding of European Markets
Can be massively over optimistic on sales targeting (like many companies)
Highly political environment and can be a bit clickey you have to manage upwards well
Process and red tape can stifle innovation - too much red tape and legal/commercial governance from the Nortel MEN acquisition can stifle innovation. Like working for hege global corporate
Commercial and legal rule the roost

    Advice to Management

sort out your GTM in strategic new areas and start listening more to what is coming up from the coal face

I worked at Ciena (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Ability to work remotely and without being micro managed.

    Cons

I was laid off one day before I would have been eligible to receive my annual bonus. Nice, huh? Lack of communication and a lot of disconnect within the team.

I have been working at Ciena full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The culture of the company is great! People are nice and have professional attitude. The company has some good packages and benefits.

    Cons

The salary is not competetive. And the rewarding and promotion system is very slow. It doesn't matter how hard you work or how much pressure you successfully handle; they make some excuses to not give you a raise and it causes losing motivation after a year or so. On the other hand, it is an excellent place for carefree people who are used to working no more than an hour a day!!! I work about 11 hrs a day handling multiple difficult tasks in my level of experience and they have no other one to replace if I leave the team but they are very hard on me when it comes to promotion. I have no motivation to continue like this after 1.5 yr of working.

    Advice to Management

Identify the smart and hardworking people that you need more and support them. With the current management system all smart people just run away from the company
