I have been working at Ciena full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

they pay pretty well and generally look after their salespeople
The company is generally doing well and under pretty good sir leadership
The cluture is pretty good it's like being in the family when you are there

    Cons

North American centric, can be less understanding of European Markets
Can be massively over optimistic on sales targeting (like many companies)
Highly political environment and can be a bit clickey you have to manage upwards well
Process and red tape can stifle innovation - too much red tape and legal/commercial governance from the Nortel MEN acquisition can stifle innovation. Like working for hege global corporate
Commercial and legal rule the roost

    Advice to Management

sort out your GTM in strategic new areas and start listening more to what is coming up from the coal face

    Pros

opportunities for career progression, internal and external training, strive to improve work/life balance, compensation,

    Cons

work/life balance for some, leadership negatively influenced too much by former acquisitions, some decisions by senior management have been very unpopular.

    Advice to Management

too much concentration on saving on budgets at the expense of work/life balance, making uninformed decisions that affect lower management and employees.

I worked at Ciena full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The People and the drive to be innovators. Ciena have a sound offering to the marketplace, that is shown by their success in winning major contracts.

    Cons

The Politics, post merger .. people kept on by cronies. Pay could be better, but the benefits aren't bad.

    Advice to Management

Value your people and look out for empire builders.

    I worked at Ciena full-time

    Pros

    Decent pay, benefits, work setting.

    Cons

Lots of politics. Less a meritocracy than a little girls and boys club. Management talks a good game - "it's all about the people, no really, blah, blah, blah." Then suddenly entire groups vanish without warning. Lots of churn in management. The rank and file punch the clock, nod vigorously, and keep mute - and survive.

    Advice to Management

Keep treading water, at least you won't drown right away.

I worked at Ciena as an intern

    Pros

Nice offices, friendly people, good pay.

    Cons

Place is kind of hit or miss depending on which team you're on. I got stuck working on the testing framework which was kind of dull.

I have been working at Ciena full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Flexible work hours. Nice new campus.

    Cons

Low pay compared to peer companies. Outdated workstations and laptops. Still using pagers (hello 1984!) for off-hours on-call duties.

    Advice to Management

More frequent merit raises and competitive salaries to match our "exceptional outcomes" (as quoted by our senior managers quarter after quarter).

Some employees haven't had a pay increase in over a decacde and some as long as 15 years.
