    Benefits and staff discount. Nice office which looks good.

      Pros

      Decent amount of holidays. Staff discount of 10% and occasional double discount days.

      Cons

      Lack of staff. If 1 person went off sick then we were screwed. Not much room for progression.

      I have been working at Co-op part-time (Less than a year)

      Pros

      - Straight forward part time job - staff discount is great - easy access to reduced offers - banter with some stuff and regular customers - paid training day out of store - quick turnaround time after initial interview

      Cons

      - as a younger staff member (still 27 though!), a lot of older staff members have been excited for me to start as it means anything remotely physical has been passed on to me. - some older staff have been a bit condescending, talking down at you because you're younger (university graduate with a 2:1 doing an internship part time alongside it!) - holiday forms are always 'conveniently' not available -slow turnaround...

      Advice to Management

      - make a bit more effort to treat your staff like human beings, especially with the brand supposedly being so focused on a positive mantra. Don't assume the worst in new starters just because of bad experiences before. - be more approachable for new starters instead of making grown men and women feel like children that'll be told off by a teacher - if someone is going to the toilet or is unwell, believe them from one...

      I have been working at Co-op full-time for more than 10 years

      Pros

      Competitive benefits including staff discount, pension scheme, health schemes, free funeral if you die in service. Nice to work in small communities.

      Cons

      Not getting breaks - if you take your breaks there isn't enough time to get jobs done and you get picked up on that. Meant to be customer focussed but have so few hours we don't have the time to give customers our full attention. Salaries are not competitive.

      Advice to Management

      Skip this one. Constant cuts to the number of hours stores are allowed to use and then boast about how high the profits are. They have integrated lots of time-saving systems, but then cut all the time that you saved so you don't end up any better off. I could understand cutting some of the time saved, but the rest should be re-invested to helping customers.

      Arrogant and disrespectful managers who try to fiddle on the system and shave off hours you have worked. I am amazed and disgusted at how widespread this behaviour actually is among store managers.       There is no advice as the entire retail food industry is rotten. Ethics are a fascade. Its all about profits, profits and more profits for those at the top.

      Pros

      Easy working hours, nice life balance, relatively good perks including gym and staff discount. Some of the work wS interesting but you had to find it.

      Cons

      Some people seem to hate it with a passion, a lot of people have worked their for ever. I got the feeling that I could have done nothing for a few years and no one would have ever tried to challenge me on it.

      Advice to Management

      Just get rid of about 50% of the head office staff probably about 75% in HR and realise there is no difference in output.

      Pros

      Staff discount and pension are good. Nice new offices in a good location. Working hours are sensible. Decent brand for CV.

      Cons

      Where do I start? Given the Co-op markets itself as an ethical brand I was shocked to experience the levels of discrimination and bullying that I saw in the Recruitment team. The management in this team have been there for so long they are basically untouchable and they can get away with anything despite the fact that some of their activities are only just legal.

      Advice to Management

      You really need to look at this team more closely.
