I have been working at Collegiate AC full-time

    Pros

My job is wearing lots of different hats every minute of the day - i am a manager, tech support, engineer, customer service, parent (to the tenants), head of entertainment and cleaning staff.... and i wouldn’t want it any other way! I have pretty much full control over my building and am given the trust and freedom to make decisions about spending and operations. Working for collegiate for the past year i have seen lots of changes and this is good. I have been able to spend time with my manager who listens and coaches me when i need help and gets me to see things from a ‘higher level’ as she would say, so I can understand why decisions are made which sometimes we as a regional management team don’t agree with or like initially. We are listened to and things always change for the better. we are supported through challenging times. We have seen one of the directors of the company on one of our weekly regional managers meetings showing his support for all of us who are working here on the front line thought COVID 19. I really like, and my team like that during this time of craziness in the word we are being kept in FULL PAY with our normal jobs to go to everyday. We have been made to feel confident that there will be no lay-offs or furghoughing for me and my staff and that we are safe going to work as we were asked to buy PPE in January when this all started so we are not scrabbling around for it now like some other places. From septmeber we have started having weekly meetings as a management team and just talking together as a team of managers has made me a better manager and helped me learn better and easier ways of getting things done in my building and with my staff. The support that has come from these is insurmountable and i now have 8 new friends and not just colleagues, especially during corona virus i speak to managers who are over 200 miles away from me more regularly than i do my own family so this is incredibly importantly to not only our team but also our mental health. The company times mental health incredibly seriously and provides mental health first aid qualifications and also provides a free phone number you can call at any point to speak to a councillor if you need it. If we are not feeling good we know we can always speak to each other or our manager and it will always be taken seriously. Good salary which makes up for no bonus or commission on sales - working for other student accommodation company before this salary with MUCH lower but got paid for bookings and 100% occupancy, was a lot harder to get paid more and made the team competitive and had a bit of a ‘phone shop’ vibe trying to pinch each others leads. This is a much nicer environment which is focused on tenants and their experience in our site and not just getting people through the door and into beds. Collegiate focuses a lot more on the tenants than other brands and makes sure that they are happy and if a complaint comes in this is always fully investigated and taken seriously unlike to other places I’ve worked where it is just shrugged off as a tenant being ‘awkward’. I have pride in my job and like going and speaking with the unis in my city and telling them who i work for, they are always impressed with our website and amazed when they come into our building. Progression in the business is good and really encouraging for us that want to move up through the company into other positions, i have been approached about managing another site in the company which would be bigger than mine and pay me more salary but it didn’t work for me.

    Cons

I like going to work every day and working with my staff that are happy to come to work and have a laugh with the tenants. We are working our backsides off at the moment getting the new computer system working and this is frustrating to do lots of checks but we all know it will be worth it in the end once it is fully up and on its feet and eventually save us time on the paper systems we are currently using. Not enough time in the day week month to do all the tasks we are often set and I want to be able to get things done in my building to make it better for tenants but we get side tracked with tasks for other departments. Would be great to see head office staff at our sites to see what we actually have to do in our buildings in a normal day. Don’t get to see each other enough as a regional management team or a whole team with us and the south team together. Don’t get told sometimes if people leave the business and end up finding out by chance. No name badges or lanyards which can be tricky especially at move in. No business cards given and told we can’t make our own which makes it awkward when we go to meetings outside people or open days. Open days can be a bit of a drama with things arriving last minute or not at all, more support with how we operate open days would be great. Would be great to have more sites and have more management positions like area managers that we could strive to work towards instead of having to turn down positions in bigger buildings 100s of miles away.

I have been working at Collegiate AC full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Every day is different!!!Working with students who are varied in home location from all over the world and learning about new cultures value systems & languages. Really fab to be part of young people’s journey through their university life. Making an impact on tenant lives in a positive way and making them know that we care about how they succeed with their lives is so rewarding. Working with an unrivalled team in their absolute domination over all other regions and departments! #TeamNorthRules Joking aside, my collegiate family are the best team I have ever worked with and love that we talk daily even though we are hundreds of miles apart and help each other with issues which are arising in this ‘unprecedented’ time. Team moral is high in a time where we cannot see or support each other in person due corona virus. The company introducing team member of the week competition keeps moral incredibly high when receiving the feedback my colleagues have given about my performance and getting little emails on a Friday saying how much I am valued by the team makes me feel valued and know that all the extra work I put in is making a good difference :) No uniform! Please don’t introduce this for managers - we’ve spied it in the budget!!!!!!!!For the first time in woking for the company it is felt that the so called bad culture from the higher management is finally changing and they are finally listening to us and care about us and are starting to understand how hard we work and he amount of overtime we put into this show to pull it off! Having one of the directors talk to us during a management meeting to answer questions about our corona virus procedures was something we did not expect and was really great to know that we are being treated like individuals during this weird old time! Excited to see where my ‘Collegiate journey’ is going to lead me going forward as I now believe in what we are doing and the leaders that are leading the charge in the company. Worked for the company for some time and this is the first time i have left a review now that i know this exists - it is sad to see that so many other people do not see the company the way I do and maybe this is because they are on different teams within the company and have different experiences but I have minimal contact with any other teams in the company and so maybe these are different????? Progression in the company really good - feel like we are appreciated and we are reached out to by our boss when she thinks we are a good fit for new positions. My boss is the queen of the north - no more needs to be said - makes you feel amazing in one phone call or email and also makes me work harder than I have ever worked in my life! That woman always has our back. Shout out to Chelsey in Accounts for her patience and to Lia in ops for never getting mad at us even when we ask 10 million questions at site and break things on the old and new systems!

    Cons

computer systems........ we keep getting told to hold on and that these will get better in different ‘phases’.... we are frustrated because we just want to get on and use them but we know they take time. but no training and no manuals make accommodation managers and our staff uneasy and worried and a bit lost. To parrot other reviews - no bonus no commission no benefits no fun days no team bonding or building days with the team or wider team no chance to meet any one at head office. Feel like other teams sometimes have no idea what we actually do to run a site.... we don’t just sit and wait for emails to come in all day and twiddle our thumbs.... this is getting better though. Would be great for head office teams to come to site to see how much work we have to do in a day! No 9-5 here with an hour of for lunch! Grab a pot noodle at your desk if you are lucky! Often work into the evening and sending emails late into the night. (love the 2am emails from my boss - opening with line “Praying you see this in the morning, please don’t respond now!) ha ha! Can often be waiting a long time on client approval on maintenance and improvement works - but understand this is just the way it is but it is difficult when we are getting heat from tenants about it everyday. Often have to wait and chase on things from marketing which never arrive especially for open days when we have been told things are coming - and they never come - having to spend money out of our own pockets last minute because things haven’t been ordered for events or open days when we have been told they have been organised. Pretty sure i’m still waiting on my flyers from 19.20 ha ha. bit of improved communication here would be good. we stopped arranging meetings as they would be confimed and the marketing girl wouldn’t show up - which we’ve heard hasn’t changed much recently with one of our new team waiting an hour and then getting shouted at for waiting. yikes. See above from Chelsey and Lia on how to be dependable and communicate well. I feel like this is a lot of cons - but the pros outweigh the cons more and more every day at the moment!

I have been working at Collegiate AC full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I have worked at Collegiate for nearly 2 years now and i have never felt more welcomed in a job role. I started at Collegiate as an apprentice and learnt so much in my first year, passing my qualification with support not just from the college but also my manager Zenab. She helped me every step of the way and genuinely wanted and still wants me to succeed. The whole team works together so well and supports each other on all tasks, the two marketing managers are my biggest support and i defiantly wouldn't be where i am today and have the knowledge I have without them.

    Cons

I have nothing bad to say about Collegiate!

I have been working at Collegiate AC full-time for less than a year

    Pros

I have never worked for a company like collegiate, the support system of the region of managers, and especially our Regional Manager is a huge bonus to this company. They listen to your concerns and really help you deal with your site when difficulties arise. They support you on new ideas, and lead you in to making your ideas and goals become achievable, one of the best companies I have worked for. It’s not just a work team it’s a new family and friends team. Every one wants everyone to do well, and they are always on call if you need them.

    Cons

I actually don’t have anything to put in this box at present

I have been working at Collegiate AC full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I have worked with Collegiate for nearly 4 years now and feel that in the last few months, they’ve shown to be working on all of the points people have raised. The job is incredibly varied and I love working with the students. You are given opportunities to develop, for example I am now working with the regional manager on policies and operational processes so you do feel valued provided you are engaging with the business. They provide training, life insurance, increase to holidays, salary reviews on an annual basis and they’ve also allowed me to study alongside my working hours and have been supportive of this. I also think the way they’ve approached the coronavirus and have been so open about where they stand, what support the essential teams will be receiving and not taking away salary for self isolating demonstrates that yes they are a business but there is a real sense of compassion and understanding that we are all a team and we are people with lives too. The last training session was excellent as it got the whole UK teams together and made us feel that we are a big unit instead of North and South teams in competition. The Head Office teams are very helpful and supportive, from Operations to Accounts.

    Cons

Sick pay could be improved and in the past it’s been quite stressful with some blame culture but this seems to be a lot less now. Marketing sometimes don’t appreciate that the managers are very busy and can be a bit demanding. There’s little communication with them.

    Collegiate AC Response

    March 24, 2020HR Director

We don’t usually comment on Glassdoor reviews and we don’t mind anonymous criticism... however this post is a deliberate lie designed to scare people and their families so we feel it important to make that clear. We take the welfare of our employees very seriously and would encourage anyone with such a concern to contact our office and speak with our staff or our HR Director. Thank you!

I have been working at Collegiate AC full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    The properties developed are nice

    Cons

Company owners treat Collegiate like a personal bank account. They charge customers excessive fees without transparency... PR is charged at over £2k per month per property (20+ properties), but it transpires they are only charged £2,600 a month and cover about 3 properties a month. The marketing team are relatively unskilled for the charges passed on. Management over sell and under deliver - as a result have lost many properties, which has resulted in condensing staff over 3 buildings into 1, and incessant micro-managing and workplace bullying.
