A formerly good company going through some very bad times

      Pros

When I joined Credit Suisse in 2008, it stood out from the other institutions I had worked for in having many highly qualified yet collegial employees. Often, in financial institutions, you either get one or the either. It had the entrepreneurial aspects of an American firm, with the work environment quality that you get in an European institution. It was a pleasant and enjoyable place to work, one in which me and my team worked hard for because we were valued, and felt proud to work for Credit Suisse.

      Cons

Unfortunately, Credit Suisse has two major problems at present (it has others, but let's focus on the most important things). First, it is undergoing a costly and difficult major restructuring, and second it is not making any money. These two issues are not unrelated, but in the current situation amplify off each other. As a result, there have been at least 8 (yes, eight) sequential rounds of redundancies in London the last few years, more to come. All the good of the past (people, culture, management) have been lost, with only third tier management and a demoralised employee base remaining. Revenue and compensation like-for-like are bottom quartile when compared with other "peer" top-10 investment banks.

Good culture in a difficult environment

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Senior management reasonable, trying to manage the business in a difficult environment where tough personnel decisions have to be taken on an almost daily basis. Management is generally visible and available for discussion. HR is trying hard to instill a culture of rewards that are of non-financial nature which is difficult to push through in a banking environment.

      Cons

Cost containment measures a major on-going focus, which can be dispiriting. Below-average comp. Regulation is a very heavy burden for investment banks, and CS is no exception. Over time, this has changed the type of person that works in an investment bank (not just at CS), such that the work environment is now less thrilling or intellectually satisfying.

      Pros

Good working environment Positive culture Meaningful, non-contrived work Learning opportunities (eg programming) Senior management are interested in what graduates have to say

      Cons

Some aspects of mentality wrt the way things are done - the company is trying to change these for the better but progress is slow which can be frustrating. Inefficient methods are hanging on in places

      Incredible working environment

Jun 20, 2014 - Summer Intern in London, England, England

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Worked as an intern in the CFO department, at 21 was offered a graduate program that would have been £36,000 p/a in 2012. The working environment was modern, people were fairly relaxed and the gym in the basement of their canary wharf office is by far the best gym I've ever been a member of!

      Cons

As I was in the CFO department, lots of the work was process focused with very little, if any, challenging work.

Good work culture, Nice people and competitive package!

      Pros

Flexible work environment, intellectual people, decent benefits, good training programmes with reasonable learning time for employees and excellent offshore support teams!

      Cons

Legacy systems are complex and needs total modernisation in terms of technology. Org structure can also be simpler and retention of talent needs more focus!
