I worked at DW Sports full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Lots of freedom to interact with customers, great level of responsibility, loved my team

    Cons

Just the pay, which is no surprise, and sometimes the flexibility.

    Advice to Management

I don't really think the managers can too much say because most things are dictated by money

I worked at DW Sports full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Free gym membership, great colleagues, varied hours

    Cons

No extra pay for overtime, unachievable targets, poor training due to low staff levels, ridiculously high staff turnover and rubbish pay for the amount of work you do

    Advice to Management

Concentrate on keeping your current members rather than obsessing over getting more membership sales and pay higher wages and your staff will work harder (and stay with the company longer!!)

    Pros

Free gym membership which you won't want to use unless at a different location as you will be disturbed constantly.

    Cons

Everything. Wage, how staff are treated by head office and management, docking wages for no reason, being disturbed on days off, changing rotas last min without letting staff know, lack of training, docking wages for the smallest reason.

    Advice to Management

Treat your staff with more respect.

I worked at DW Sports part-time

    Pros

Working with good colleagues, even though most of them leave or are so low due to lack of direction and mis-management and then leave

    Cons

Lack of recognition at every level, no cohesion from leaders, poor leadership judgment and company-wise direction

    Advice to Management

Listen to staff, look after your people and they will look after your business. Provide clear communications to ALL on business plans and direction on goals.

I worked at DW Sports full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Gym membership, if you don’t mind your workouts being disturbed

    Cons

Watched the place go from bad to worse. Hour cuts in important areas “across the board” no matter how busy your club was. For example, the area manager would complain your club was dirty, then email you the next day telling you to cut your cleaning staff hours! Management hours and job spec stretched without any pay increase. Sales targets rarely hit, but if you do hit them head office will attempt to fail your club in other operational or admin areas to not pay you the bonus. Clock in 5 minutes late and you lose half an hour pay, no consideration if you’re late due to genuine reasons such as traffic issues etc. But if you work more than your time, no extra pay. Maintenance support for head office very poor, sometimes things like air-conditioning would take months to get fixed. Gym equipment maintenance often delayed because “head office haven’t paid the bill”. Orders placed for consumables and cleaning products usually cut down by head office without you knowing until the order turns up short.

If you ever got a visit from Mr Whelan himself, often the manager would be in tears when he leaves. Very greedy man who shouldn’t have been involved with health clubs.

    Advice to Management

The cons may have improved since fitness first merged with DW, but I wouldn’t count on it!
