I worked at Daily Mail and General Trust full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    * Great colleagues from all over the world, some of which became my mentors * Opportunity to work in the publishing and media industry at scale * Opportunity to use the best tools for the jobs * MailOnline felt like a startup within a larger organisation - very lean and despite being a big corporate, not much getting in the way of bottom-up innovation

    Cons

    * Lack of structure around product delivery * It was often hard to understand the impact of your work * Complete disconnect between the IT departments and rest of the organisation

    Advice to Management

Lack of high level company objectives and if they exist then not sharing them with delivery teams leads to a potential misalignment. Retrospectively, management should have set challenging goals for the departments, focus on innovation and make sure that all teams understand their objectives.

    Doesn't Recommend

I worked at Daily Mail and General Trust full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Fast-paced, wide range of stories to cover, siege mentality among hard-pressed colleagues, decent pay for the work. Don't have to take your home work with you.

    Cons

Management have a horrendous, abusive approach to "motivating" staff, and the rightwing, often racist, frequently misogynist angle of their coverage is grating.

    Advice to Management

Shut it down. Have a long hard look at yourselves and what you've become.

I worked at Daily Mail and General Trust full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Experience, better pay than most online papers, if you can survive here you can work anywhere.

    Cons

Irregular working hours, rota can change at a moments notice and you might not be told, you'll be working at 7am one week and doing lates till 2am the next, say goodbye to Christmas, it's impossible to plan anything in the future like attending weddings etc because they do the rota ad hoc. Atmosphere is stressful, although there are some decent people there, the editors have a lot of pressure on them so expect to be... on the receiving end of that. The office is pretty basic, they run out of tea and coffee often.

    Advice to Management

Too many people scheduled to work over Christmas, don't need them.

I worked at Daily Mail and General Trust full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Learned a lot from really smart, talented people. Trusted early on with a large project. Managers were great (apart from one, who no longer works there)

    Cons

The salary is a bit low. Someone might be on £18k, while someone in a similar position might be £38k. I get that some are more experienced but maybe promote them to a senior member 9f staff. Some staff openly state they don't want to share information, as they'll lose value in the company and face no repercussions. You shouldn't hire people that aren't team players.

    Advice to Management

Reward people that go above and beyond and recognise the hard workers. Notice who don't put in much work and think about getting rid of toxic people.
