I have been working at Duke University part-time (More than a year)
Pros
- located in Smith Warehouse, wonderful workplace environment
- all the staff are extremely friendly and always eager to help
- embrace diversity
- you will be the first one to know what books the library has bought for its collection (good for book lovers)
- flexible schedule
Cons
As a student assistant, I don't have much information. But one thing I heard from my supervisor is that there are very few job vacancies because most staff members will basically stay at their position until retirement. This means if you work part-time or are on contract, the chance to become full-time employer is low.
Pros
Good name for job applications, had a lot of fun there
Cons
Difficult to understand graduation requirements and advisors aren't of any assistance. Career help is limited
Advice to Management
Continue to help alumni with careers after graduation... it will help to increase the influence of the alumni network and in turn I might actually feel inclined to donate when you call me.

I have been working at Duke University full-time (Less than a year)
Pros
Great work culture, good team communication, feeling highly valued and appreciated, somewhat flexible office hours, feels like there are lots of opportunities to grow, I really feel like management on many levels is striving towards excellence
Cons
Communal work spaces are great, but lighting is back in individual offices, building tends to be very cold
Advice to Management
So far, I only have great things to say!
I have been working at Duke University full-time (More than 8 years)
Pros
Psychic benefits of doing interesting and valuable work. Benefits package is good for the area, and includes the infamous"golden handcuffs," the child college tuition benefit.
Cons
Decentralized to the point of being disorganized. Accordingly always a risk that a unit head is a faculty member promoted without managerial aptitude or training.
Advice to Management
Take steps to treat staff better. Work to overcome the culture where there are only two employee categories: faculty and secretaries.
I worked at Duke University (Less than a year)

Cons
