I have been working at Dyson full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Dyson is one of the most well-known companies within the united kingdom and whilst there are a tonne of things wrong with the business, it's reassuring to know that the company is ambitious in its expansion.

    + Standard 9-5
+ Good food within the canteen
    + Good staff benefits
    + Reasonable salary and bonuses
    + Free shuttle from Chippenham
    + Casual office environment
    + Dyson institute of technology
    + Desire to expand

    Cons

Now, on to the cons. Despite being around for the last 20+ years, it feels that the company has expanded too rapidly and whilst an extensive training program has been developed for people working within the contact centre, RDD has absolutely no such thing in place.

The introduction talks are a brilliant way to bring people into the company, however, once those have concluded, you're left to fend for yourself in a sink or swim environment, which is incredibly stressful for the employee but also detrimental to the business and will only end up causing the business to shoot itself in the foot.

    - Lack of training beyond intro talks
    - Sink or swim attitude
    - Office politics
    - Hostility to any changes not suggested by management
    - Adherence to obsolete research methods
    - No explanation for how internal project develop

    Advice to Management

Enhance the current training program for new employees; ensure that there is a training regime in place so they can effectively adjust to their new role. Perhaps consult with their line manager and determine how they're going to be trained up.

Ensure that employees suggestions to better company are taken seriously and not simply dismissed.

Keep heads above the parapet to ensure current developments within respective research fields can be implemented within the company.

Drop the "sink or swim"/"marmite" attitude. This attitude is not only counter-productive, it is more costly to the business in the long run. Yes, there are a large number of people who'd love to work for Dyson, but high staff turnover means that a lot of time is being spent on recruiting replacements and then "training" them, only for them to leave later on. To reiterate, consider that the "Dyson way" may have some serious flaws to it, especially as the company continues to grow. If this attitude persists, it is only a matter of time before the company fails.

I have been working at Dyson full-time

    Pros

Strong development opportunities if located near Malmesbury Head Office.
Strong brand with unique identity & new high tech HO campus.
    Autonomy within role is great.

    Cons

The Retail Team feels separate to what is happening at Dyson HO - it's the boring department of an exciting company.
Sales team work primarily on weekends so typically involves working 3/4 weekends a month.
    Very poor work life balance.

    Advice to Management

Expectation for teams to work all hours is not acceptable.

    I worked at Dyson full-time

    Pros

Good discount, some great co-workers. Most people really buy into the Dyson cult.

    Cons

Senior management in IT not really team aware, looking out primarily for themselves. No cohesive strategy, or at least able to give a cohesive strategy.

    Advice to Management

Trust in your staff, be friendlier and more approachable.

    I worked at Dyson full-time

    Pros

    - varied and interesting work
    - great teams of people, very diverse
    - flexible working hours
    - gym access
    - outdoor space
    - discount off Dyson products and allow purchases for friends/family

    Cons

    - middle management not the most competent
    - many "years of service" style promotions
    - lacking clear direction from management
    - bureaucracy
    - HR value pioneers but innovation not encouraged by management
    - people do not feel valued and high turn-over
    - lack of good quality project manager and planners
    - inaccessible location for many (Malmesbury, UK) and limited parking
    - knowing people considered more important than ability to deliver work
    - actual ability and experience less important that time served
    - pay below average, especially for location
    - bullying and monotheist culture
    - unhealthy food options and limited places to heat home-made food
    - short lunch break, 30 minutes

    Advice to Management

    - support HR to deal with bullying culture
    - look inwards to organise teams to work more effectively and remove duplication before employing more in already large teams
    - train your managers, specifically performance related
    - consider your corporate social responsibility, all about the profit margin

I have been working at Dyson (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Exciting technology business that continues to grow and be successful. Still small enough for you to make a difference and genuinely wants to improves things that aren't as good as they could be.

    Cons

Growing pains - inadequate facilities like parking, other poor infrastructure in places - the support functions; particularly IT, procurement and finance are terrible.

    Advice to Management

Make sure you keep the culture that made the company successful and try empowering your people more - too much power and control rests with too few people some of whom are not up to it.

I have been working at Dyson full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Ambition of the company is huge, and means lots of growth and opportunities.
Business is willing to take a risks on less experienced internal hires - lots of international opportunities.

    Cons

It's chaotic - little process and prefers fast action rather than consideration / planning - means long-term time can be wasted.
Objectives need to be re-written every few months.
