I worked at EF Education First

    Pros

Your recruiter will be pretty helpful with your Visa application - although, they will omit to tell you legal and contractual aspects which would scare you off the job. They place you in a nice hotel for the first 2 weeks, and the woman who helped to set up the bank accounts was very nice and down-to-earth, unlike most people who work here.

    Cons

Unpleasant Work Culture - there is a strange cultish, American vibe to the company which I find difficult to put into words, the only thing I can compare it to is the antagonist family from the movie 'Get Out' - expect many fake smiles, individuals who appear to be getting tortured behind the scenes but nevertheless promote EF's ostensible code of conduct, and individuals who are so married to their job they exhibit...

Current Employee - Online ESL Teacher

I have been working at EF Education First part-time for less than a year

      Pros

The fact that they are based in the UK is amazing as there is no messing around with self-assessment and you can just crack on with things. They also offer a pension scheme.

      Cons

Wage is only slightly above the national minimum and extremely low compared to what I can earn as a day-to-day teacher in physical settings.

      Advice to Management

Consider further performance related bonuses/higher initial wage for teachers with proven years of experience.

I worked at EF Education First full-time for less than a year

      Pros

Lovely team and socials. I had lots of fun and good teaching experience.

      Cons

Working Monday to Saturday and sometimes disorganised.

      Advice to Management

To include London weighting. Per hour it's not much.

I worked at EF Education First full-time for less than a year

      Pros

-great materials -amazing students -easy to use their Online platform

      Cons

-salary is too low for teaching position with a minimum increase every year which is barely catching up with inflation in the UK. - No opportunities to advance or earn more money. -No possibilities to do less than 15 hours per month. This can be an additional job for many, therefore, it should be a flexible contract.

      Advice to Management

Wages should be matched to your competitors. Other Online teaching companies pay much more per hour.

I worked at EF Education First full-time for less than a year

      Pros

Fellow teachers- Some of the strongest people I've met. Sadly, no one who started with me in January 2018 remains there on a full-time contract. Students- You get some great students who can really make the difference between a good day and a bad day.

      Cons

Appalling working conditions 40hrs a week, often with a double banking 30 hr contact time 'summer' timetable even in winter. Many teachers stay until 7pm even 9pm (unpaid) to plan and many come in on weekends. The management are out the door at 5.30 sharp. There is a mentality of don't bother planning, which affects class quality and teacher burnout. Understaffed and overworked, leading to teacher breakdowns in...

      Advice to Management

Incompetence and vindictiveness look very similar and you will lose your best teachers over and over again, not the ones with the highest 'ratings' but the teachers who can actually teach, if you don't change the atmosphere and attitude of the school. I have seen fantastic teachers leave and people who needed help not given that help and instead left to suffer. Your actions have affected people's lives and the teachers...

I worked at EF Education First part-time for less than a year

      Pros

Fun environment, free TEFL training (if you want it, you don't need it if you have a degree), a lot of independence given to you in the classroom. You have to follow a textbook, but can also mix up the way you teach and play games at the start and end etc.

      Cons

Once you add in the time you need to take to lesson plan, the wage is actually not all that great. It's very clever how you're quoted per teaching block and not per hour, because this means that all lunchtime meetings, training, and overtime are not paid - you only get paid for your three hour teaching block. Watch out especially if you're applying to be a leader, as things like London trips do not include travel...

      Advice to Management

The company is doing well and staff work hard. EF is a fun place to work but the fact we get paid so little (especially for a skilled job - teachers have to be qualified), really puts a downer on the experience and makes us feel undervalued and like you're cutting corners. Also - pay the host families more.
