I worked at EF English First full-time for more than a year

    Pros

There's a real career here if you want it, plenty of opportunities for promotion within the EF network. Training workshops. Support network

    Cons

The half hour catch up classes for students of other teachers who missed their previous class (you can't do anything in half an hour) Money at times seems to be the most important thing to the company.

I worked at EF English First

    Pros

Flexible - create your own schedule from week to week. Open 24hrs a day so suits those in any time zone. Easy - all group class materials are pre-prepared and are very straightforward and easy to use. Fun - Lovely students and short classes make for a fun atmosphere. I worked various hours as a contract teacher over several years and overall the job was enjoyable, extremely convenient and suited my needs. I taught...

    Cons

Pay - EF employs teachers of all levels of ability so the low pay (£6-£7) is good for some but very poor for those of us demanding £20 an hr elsewhere. Management - I was left to my own devices most of the time but I saw decent teachers treated very badly, threatened, accused of being unprofessional and underpaid every month! IT - Constant problems with sound and connection. Considering it is an online school this...

    Advice to Management

Please respect teacher s and students more. The students are paying for a service but are being let down by poor IT and unfair packages. Stop relying on the goodwill of the teachers to provide a service that they should be getting paid more for! You are taking advantage of people.

I worked at EF English First full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Interesting people working with you, the teachers are great. Good potential for moving up the ladder, at least when I was there. Chance to gain different experience in different depts. Some good teacher training, however this is mostly scrapped now.

    Cons

Terrible working hours and little respect for staff Little coherence internally: Total mismatch of pro ported values and actual actions Appalling management attitudes at the top, continual change for changes sake Business trumps education High turnover of staff, real imbalance in fairness between Chinese and Western staff-though this is changing

    Advice to Management

Build the company into something more evenly balanced between education and business. You do both after all. Stop externally hiring useless ladder climbers as your senior management. Be much more transparent and flat (you say you are but really you're not.)

I have been working at EF English First full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I have loved working with the students. EF gives me the opportunity to work with a wide range of ages and abilities. EF also provides wonderful continuing education through in-center and city-wide training, supporting teachers to develop themselves. Many of the 'foreign' teachers (native English speakers living in China or another country with EF schools) have no prior teaching experience, so this gives everyone necessary...

    Cons

This is a business and it is focused on making money. It values educating the students, but mainly in terms of making parents happy, with less interest in the students' long term success. As a career teacher, this can be disheartening. Teachers are only expected to stay for a year or two, so it can be hard to keep forming and maintaining relationships with new co-workers. This also means constantly having to train...

I worked at EF English First full-time

    Pros

If you’re coming to China for the first time, EF is a great way to get settled into the country. For me, the culture shock was real upon coming into the country so it helped to have the support provided. The two weeks of orientation really helped to just have time to get used to the country, but as far as teaching goes, if you’re quite new, it still felt like being thrown into the deep end for me. You’ll learn and get...

I have been working at EF English First full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Get to work in multiple locations abroad.

    Cons

They lie about paying you back for flights (I was told this would happen as soon as I arrived but it actually comes in monthly installments). Seriously overworked and underpaid. They claim to offer language lessons, but with the great firewall of China none of us can access online lessons - pointless. Don't offer any help/guidance after first week. Upper management typically don't speak English at all, so if you...

I have been working at EF English First full-time for less than a year

    Pros

I do not have many pros to say about the company. A good experience to live in another country and to gain teaching experience.

    Cons

I am going to be completely honest. The pay is not good at all. EF will tell you they have a competitive pay in China but they do not. EF cannot keep teachers because of the pay. You earn 13,000 yuan and jobs pay more than 20,000 yuan with free housing. When you arrive in China with EF, they will offer you a loan for housing to move in but they will deduct your pay every month. China tax your pay, you have to pay for...
