I worked at EF English First full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Interesting people working with you, the teachers are great. Good potential for moving up the ladder, at least when I was there. Chance to gain different experience in different depts. Some good teacher training, however this is mostly scrapped now.

    Cons

Terrible working hours and little respect for staff Little coherence internally: Total mismatch of pro ported values and actual actions Appalling management attitudes at the top, continual change for changes sake Business trumps education High turnover of staff, real imbalance in fairness between Chinese and Western staff-though this is changing

    Advice to Management

Build the company into something more evenly balanced between education and business. You do both after all. Stop externally hiring useless ladder climbers as your senior management. Be much more transparent and flat (you say you are but really you're not.)

I worked at EF English First full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Work environment varies from school to school, but it's generally relaxed, fun and enjoyable. Avoid franchise schools and you'll usually be okay. Decent opportunities for growth after one year. Pay is fair. Training and classroom materials are getting better. Some school have a separation between local and foreign staff, but others, like mine, have great relationships between the two.

    Cons

Summer course is rough - expect long hours and an exhausting schedule, and the bonus pay is a joke. Management is not always sympathetic, and quality varies widely from school to school. Difficult to take leave time, especially for more than a week. Schools always feel understaffed.

    Advice to Management

Focus more on teacher retention. Push for better support for teacher, especially in the summer. The training opportunities for CELTA, etc. are a great start.

I worked at EF English First full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    - opportunities for advancement. - standardized benefits based on market norms. - lots of resources at your disposal - generally a great staff a professional Chinese who are also able to assist you with so many things that go well beyond their regular job duties. The Chinese staff are usually the shining stars of an EF establishment.

    Cons

    - there are sometimes sketchy head teachers who can make things difficult for you. - EF also operates in some cities that are less than desirable to work in.

    Advice to Management

There is very little advice I can provide. The company has done exceedingly well in maintaining some international values while trying to operate within the very difficult boundaries that China can create. The country is fantastic but it can be difficult for foreign businesses, not so for EF.
