Overall great, but room for improvement

      Pros

Amazing engineering culture and team. It's a place to learn so much from really smart people. As many career development opportunities as you could ever ask for (careful not to take too much on though). If you're hungry, you'll be satisfied. We have the privilege to protect and promote amazing journalism that the world really needs now. There's a healthy respect for work-life balance, at least in engineering. There's a strong desire to change the company and become product and outcome-led, even from the top (appointing a CPO is a great example of this). It's the most diverse team I've ever worked on.

      Cons

Very little trust from much of senior leadership. Despite a desire to be product, data, and outcome-led, we're still very opinion and project-led. We have mission-based product teams, but they currently exist mostly in name. Mission metrics are often undeliverable due to a stream of projects that don't apply to teams' missions (but must be done), and decisions made (product and technical) outside the team's control. Key product decisions are made for teams by senior leadership without input from the team (or even the product manager). Teams have been restructured significantly multiple times per year, each year.

Top down, micro management (in certain areas), such potential

      Pros

Great brand on the CV. Some great pockets of management, even in the top levels. Feels like the company direction is sound, and the plan makes sense

      Cons

Micromanagement and lack of trust of the teams hired to do the job is high, this is from the CEO down. The return to work 3 days a week is mandated from the top, even if certain roles or teams would work better with one or two days. Again top down, lack of trust. Chief Product Officer and Chief Marketing Officer, please are prime examples of micromanagement. What's the point of hiring great designers, delivery managers, product managers and developers if you constantly challenge the decisions they are making. You hired them with the promise of "Mission based teams". What we've ended up with is feature factories, do as we ask factories, do a deck get it torn apart by the CMO factories.

      Nice but old fashioned

      Pros

Nice people to work with. Reasonable work life balance. Management acknowledging that organization is silo-ed which is a plus in my book. Behind on the technology side but again recognized and being addressed. Attention paid to learning and development through access to courses and job levels.

      Cons

Very high turn over in people. It is all well and good to put some foundations down you still have the cultural aspect and the fact that pay wise this company is not likely to attract the technology people it needs right now in any country.

Avoid at all cost if you're an Engineer

Jun 18, 2021 - Software Engineer in Birmingham, England, England

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - Culture in Birmingham office

      Cons

      - Management is backwards and getting progressively worse - People in charge have no clue how technology functions and therefore make silly decisions that bite them in their backside - 0 trust for engineers. Engineers are not empowered & their feedback is never sought. Always, without fail, bring in consultancies when decision making rather than relying on engineer's expertise and knowledge
