I have been working at Edelman full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    - Ability to tap global network of experts with diverse backgrounds and experience - Tons of room for both vertical and lateral growth across various industries and communications marketing capabilities - Excellent work/life balance and flexibility to work from home when needed (some offices have free gyms and yoga classes) - Company makes diversity and inclusion, citizenship, green initiatives, and non-profit work...

    Cons

    - Sometimes, client needs will require longer work days, weekend work, and travel, but this level of demand ebbs and flows throughout your PR career and depends on your level and area of expertise (e.g. crisis communications will require you to be on-call) - Like any business, there are periods of turn-over that can put temporary stress on teams, but Edelman's leadership always works to listen to employee concerns and...

Promote and distribute pay raises based on performance (instead of tenure/experience) and you'll be better able to keep talented employees who exhibit great potential

I have been working at Edelman full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Structured working environment for early-career professionals. Opportunity to work with clients from a broad range of industries. Entrepreneurial culture that's open to new ideas from all levels. Access to high-level campaigns.

    Cons

Subjective performance evaluation. Below average salary. Work life balance is spoken of but barely enforced by upper management.

    Advice to Management

People are your greatest assets... not clients.

I have been working at Edelman full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

big company with a lot of capabilities and great brands

    Cons

corrupt inner-workings; deserving talent goes unrecognized for years without promotions and show ponies get recognized/pr. Lack of transparency with promotions, unfair raises and vagueness surrounding the entire topic.

    Advice to Management

recognize talent before they quit so the turnover doesn't keep getting worse.

I worked at Edelman full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Smart people, great opportunities, a lot is expected of junior levels, direct client interaction from day 1, learned a TON, promotions often, great on a resume

    Cons

Basically a sweatshop. I never got out of my desk and was expected to be on my phone at all times. Emails were sent late into the night. For what you are getting paid (not much and less than other agencies), it’s not worth it to completely lose your life. Highly competitive (not in a good way). Not a good working environment.

    Advice to Management

Increase pay. Add perimeters to allow more work-life balance.

I have been working at Edelman full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

You'll gain tons of great work experience at Edelman. Top-notch clients, lots of specialty practices so if you work on an integrated client you get a chance to work with people in many departments. The firm has a great reputation, so it's also a good resume-builder. The people you'll work with are extremely talented, smart and motivated - I've met few slackers / non-team players at Edelman! Also some nice perks, like...

    Cons

Culture and organization leaves a lot to be desired. New managers receive absolutely no training or support, and new employees are only given 1-2 hours worth of onboarding by HR. It's often very unclear who you go to for what, or the procedures for certain things. Usually you just have to ask around to find an answer to questions, which leaves room for new employees to make errors in their work process or not bring in...

    Advice to Management

Compensate employees based on market value - the Bay Area is an extremely expensive place to live. Create a central repository of information about company contacts, procedures and policies, and update it regularly (current systems feature many old documents). Make internal opportunities more visible to those who aren't as "well-connected" internally but might be qualified/interested in another account or new business...

I worked at Edelman for more than 5 years

    Pros

Global agency with good international opportunities; entrepreneurial spirit = if you come with good ideas and the business case you can create it (they love new products clients will buy up); get to work with some of the largest, most influential organizations in the world.

    Cons

Very P&L-driven, to a fault. It's not ALL about growth. Culture is dependent on local leaders and local teams to carry. They let people go fairly often (particularly VP and up) which hurts morale and adds to high turn-over fatigue in teams and for clients.

I have been working at Edelman full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Get to work with the best thought-leaders in the industry, big clients, international opportunities; Great leadership team

    Cons

The NYC office is mired in politics, moving past the AS/AM level is not merit-based anymore but it's favoritism/cronyism. Hence, one can more often than not find themselves with a line manager that is not interested in great work or let alone helping you grow, but that is purely in it for themselves. One mistake and you get thrown under the bus. Eat or be eaten mentality.

    Advice to Management

P&L structure is a hindrance and cause for most of the politics that is poisening the workplace culture; The leadership/executive team has all the best intentions at heart, and the values they hold dear are certainly great, but they need to open their eyes to the fact that follow-through down to the AAE level is NOT happening.
