    Pros

Flexible, lots of programs available to teach once you get on staff as a contract instructor.
Full benefits after teaching 250 hrs in one year, then 150 hrs per year to continue your benefits.
BCIT has a great reputation in the industry.

    Cons

Can be difficult to get substitute instructors if have a conflict with other work.

    Advice to Management

Part-time instructors aren't included in the policy development of the organization, yet many have been around as long as the day instructors. Status of Part-time instructors can feel inferior to full-time instructors, yet we do the same work under different employment contracts.

    Pros

Great work-life balance. A nice variety of projects come through for employees in the Technology Center. Co-workers are interesting people and you also meet many clients. Unionized so they benefits such as vacation are pretty good.

    Cons

Lower pay than in industry. Not a lot of money available for professional development outside of what is offered at the school itself. Unionized, so if there's a strike you are out of pay.

    Advice to Management

Value the technology workers and support them in keeping up with the constant changes in their field. Identify focus areas and short-term and long-term goals for a department along with benchmarks so the employees know how they're doing.
