Gumtree was sold to 58.com towards the end of 2024, in a sale that was seemingly never publicly announced. Throughout the sale process the team were reassured that jobs were safe. That they weren't planning on shipping all the work out to China but instead, wanted to invest and grow the teams in the UK. Almost immediately, everything changed for the worst. They bought in a load of inept middle aged, dry male leadership from Checkatrade. They made senior members of the team redundant. The Checkatrade zombies provided no reassurance, strategy, or direction. But instead, have done a fantastic job of acting as soulless puppets to buffer between 58.coms demands and anyone who is unfortunate enough to still work at Gumtree in the UK.
What made Gumtree special does not exist anymore. The ethos of recycling goods and connecting communities is dead. The future vision looks like the UK answer to Alibaba.com
Utterly disappointing and demotivating.
