    Pros

No uniform. Good amount of holiday.

    Cons

Where to start? Having read other reviews, I can see that my experiences are not unique, and are common throughout the organisation. Terrible pay. Especially for sleep ins. Dictatorial management, don't care what support workers have to say about anything. Unrealistic expectations held by management. Trying to report concerns is likely to get you into serious trouble. Lack of regard for working time regulations. Way too much paperwork. Training is inadequate. Staff being being pressured to work when recovering from surgery. The biggest problem is that Mencap's overwhelming concern is it's reputation. It's focus is always on public perception, and management will stop at almost nothing to protect the reputation from any kind of negative publicity. Anonymous reviews on the internet are the only safe forum we have to raise our grievances. Anything said by staff in the open can, and will, be used against them.

    Mencap Response

    Head of Resourcing

Hi and thank you for your review. I am concerned that you feel that this is a safe forum to discuss your concerns and raise your grievances. I personally do not feel that this is a safe forum, what worries me is that if you do have genuine concerns regarding employee well-being I am unable to assist you, unless you make contact with me directly. You mention other postings similar to your own , which means that you will have seen my personal response, asking for the poster to contact me, in confidence so that we can listen, investigate and act, if appropriate. I do not understand why you wouldn’t have wanted to contact me in the first instance. Your communication with me would have been confidential and I sincerely want to support any of our employees who feel that they are experiencing difficulties locally. We deliver 600 plus services and have nearly 700 front line managers, which one do you have the concerns about, I am unable to identify from your posting where I should be looking to support if necessary. As you will know we employ over 8000 relief and permanent support workers had access to the Investors In People survey, this was 100% confidential and their overwhelming feedback was that they were very satisfied with working at Mencap, I am sorry that you feel you are not having a similar experience. I offer you my personal assistance and guarantee your confidence. To address some of the concerns you raise: 1. Terrible pay – especially for sleep ins . Pay within our sector is an issue and well documented. Universally at Mencap we would like to address low pay however it is limited by the amount we can afford to pay within the commissioned contract we deliver. In comparison to other providers, we do remain competitive, especially with regards to our total rewards and benefits. Sleep in pay rates are being discussed presently, I cannot confirm that there will be an increase however the rates , locally, regionally and nationally are being considered. 2. Dictatorial management. Again as mentioned above, I cannot address this without knowing more detail, please reach out to me and I promise, I will listen to your concerns. 3. Unrealistic concerns held by management. As above, without knowing who you are referring to it is difficult to assist. I can assure you that this is not a concern held by the vast majority of our employees with regards to their managers. 4. Lack of regard to working time regulations. We have strict and enforceable policies related to the working time directive. We monitor hours worked and paid centrally. I can confirm that I can see no evidence of continued and widespread disregard for the working time directive. The only way that you could be breaking this would be if you are not being paid for those hours. 5. Way too much paper. This is a concern raised by a number of our support staff. We work in highly compliant and regulatory environment. Providing evidence of support provided is required by the CQC. Wherever possible we do look at replication, duplication and unnecessary form filling and remove as appropriate. If there is an element of the paperwork you are required to complete that you feel is redundant, please speak with your Quality Team, local manager or People Business Partner. As an organisation we welcome collaboration and encourage inclusivity, help be part of the solution and start the discussion. 6. Training is inadequate. We are recognised as an organisation which provides excellent training and ongoing development. Our highest scoring area within Glassdoor, Indeed and in fact our own internal surveys (employee engagement and IiP) provides evidence that we are rated very highly within this key area. If you feel that you have had a bad experience, please reach out to me in confidence and identify which element you believe has not met the mark. 7. Staff being pressured to work. Again, I need to know where you work and who this claim relates to. Please reach out to me so that I can assist you. 8. Reputation. All organisations are concerned about their reputation, I cannot think of one that does not protect their brand. However I would stress that we would never sacrifice the safety of our employees or the people we support over brand. As mentioned before, please reach out to me personally, talk to me and let me know how I can support you. I look forward to hearing from you.
