  1. "Great place to work, culture is great - though some external hires can cause major damage to brand and culture"

I have been working at Nationwide Building Society full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Mutual to its core, affecting everything they do at every level

    Cons

A team with only internally hired senior figures gets trapped in group think; a team with a head that was externally hired can forget mutual values at times.

    Advice to Management

Hire externally when needed, but focus on alignment to brand and culture, not how they are seen by 'the industry'.

I worked at Nationwide Building Society full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Lovely place to work, employee wellbeing is high on the agenda, great people around who are supportive and friendly. Interesting and challenging place to be. The CEO, Joe Garner, is a top man - don't read what the Daily Mail says about him!

    Cons

Scope for promotion is severely limited. The cost challenge internally ensures that if anyone leaves at their own accord, the first question that is asked is "can we do without this role". In many ways that is fair enough! Any company has the right to structure itself anyway it likes, but it can be frustrating if you've been eyeing a particular job up for a while. Nationwide also takes forever to get anything done...

Think about how you reward and support people in their careers quickly! Otherwise you may end up losing a lot of your best people.
