    Pros

Many of my colleagues are awesome. They're committed and generous. Many have spent years creating supportive and productive communities. As a result, for a period, Leicester university was quite an exciting period to work. For me, that period came to an end around 2015...

    Cons

Senior managers – from the Chair of Council (Gary Dixon), Vice-Chancellor (Paul Boyle until 2019, then Nishan Canagarajah) and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Edmund Burke) down – have created and enable a toxic working environment. Bullying is endemic, particularly of women and staff of colour: bullies seem to get rewarded, their victims get managed out of the institution. Things are have only got worse during the pandemic: casualised staff were abandoned and senior managers were aggressive in their demands that staff work on campus in unsafe conditions. (The situation for students is as bad – some of the University accommodation is hazardous.) The institution's finances are so fragile – a result of rash borrowing decisions – that COVID has brought it close to bankruptcy. Executives are trying to make staff pay for their failures with mass redundancies. Not a good place to work. Not a good place to be a student.
