I worked at Essex County Council full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great informal atmosphere compared to lots of other local government offices. The policy team is proactive and there’s a good culture of innovation. Team members generally have a chance to work on big projects from day one and there’s lots of flexibility in terms of working practices.

    Cons

The division of ECC into specific teams with access to different funding can lead to diciplinary silos sometimes. Several projects I’ve worked on could’ve been delivered more effectively with more integrated approaches from different teams.

I have been working at Essex County Council full-time

    Pros

Colleagues are passionate about their roles.

You can make a real difference to the lives of others.

Some effort is put into place for employee wellbeing and career development

Culture of flexible working 'work is a thing you do not a place that you go'

    Cons

Large organisation- slower movement of information and decisions and processes are more complicated

Work can be stressful. High expectations are placed on volume and quality of work without provision of adequate staffing or resources. This situation is unlikely to improve as budget cuts continue.

Local Authorities are often blamed for things that they have little influence over.

    Advice to Management

Please improve the job vacancies website . It is difficult to navigate, the job titles are not informative and you cannot open a new window to look at the details of a post- you have to look at them one at a time or start a new search in each window.

I have been working at Essex County Council full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Steady pay, good pension, continuous service benefits, sick pay.

    Cons

Cannot take leave during term time, line manager's for this post have never been a caretaker/site manager so do not have a clue what is really involved with the job, as non teaching support staff you are not valued by the senior management team, work load is constantly excessive and pay is not enough for responsibilities/ workload and in most schools you have to work a split shift.

    Advice to Management

Good caretakers/site managers never stay long in this post because the pay does not reflect workload and responsibilities.

I worked at Essex County Council full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The employees are lovely people to work with, everyone is very supportive of one another. Some higher managers are also great and really listen to your concerns. Start pay is quite good for the area.

    Cons

Pay does not increase much over time. I believe London pay is better.
Systems and processes are CONSTANTLY changing, you need to be able to keep up with the changes and be proactive with this.

    Advice to Management

My managers were great but this will be a message to other managers:
listen to your team and be supportive
Learn how to deal with your stress better and do not take it out on innocent staff members.

I have been working at Essex County Council full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Flexible working
    Fair salary
    Interesting work
    Some managers are excellent

    Cons

Senior managers and leadership team out of touch with workforce views. Lots of employee surveys go round, little make a difference; decisions already made before staff consulted. Result is systems, processes and practices that are ineffective, inefficient and frustrating for workforce.

    Advice to Management

Don't keep sending out employee surveys in the pretence you are listening - decisions are often already made by the time issues go out for consultation.
