I have been working at Essex County Council full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Flexible working
    Fair salary
    Interesting work
    Some managers are excellent

    Cons

Senior managers and leadership team out of touch with workforce views. Lots of employee surveys go round, little make a difference; decisions already made before staff consulted. Result is systems, processes and practices that are ineffective, inefficient and frustrating for workforce.

    Advice to Management

Don't keep sending out employee surveys in the pretence you are listening - decisions are often already made by the time issues go out for consultation.

I have been working at Essex County Council part-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

People are generally a good bunch. Fair pay. Fair training opportunities. Lots of roles available. Flexible working if you’re lucky.

    Cons

Hot desking leads staff to feel like they’re alone. Changes to the pay grading scheme are tantamount to bafoonary. Any scope to move up a salary bracket has now been taken away. If you want a pay rise, good luck. The current restructuring in social care leaves people feeling unvalued and unimportant. Staff left waiting for months on end not knowing where they’d be placed and with no real say. Doesn’t seem like a smart idea for a local authority that has a 30% staff deficit.

    Advice to Management

Focus more on wellbeing and not so much on cutting costs.
    Listen to your employees.
Lead by example for good practice not by pressure to please senior management.
    Inspire

I have been working at Essex County Council full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I started with ECC over 20 years ago and in that time I have had numerous roles which is one of the benefits of working with such a large employer. In more recent times there have been significant improvements with the flexibility around working patterns and shifts with the technology and office space making it a good place to base from. As a large council they strive to do the very best of the citizens of Essex and it continues to be a positive value base to hold.

    Cons

Like most local government there is a rather odd view that re-structures are a cure all when clearly there are not. Combine that with weak performing leaders and the whole thing can be a bit of a mockery. The recent pay review is comical and strangely seems to favour the most senior positions yet again.

    Advice to Management

Slow down the rash thinking, try embedding change constructively and just because you take on another high paying exec don't think that you have to bend over and let them drive home ill thought out ideas.

I worked at Essex County Council full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I worked for Essex for 3 years, when I was roughly 17 - 21 years old. Worked in admin roles in a few different teams. Good opportunity for progression and growth. Good people to work with. Some management better than others but that's true everywhere. Good benefits package (annual leave, salary sacrifice, pension etc) and decent enough about Flexi Time or hours in the admin roles I had. Internal recruitment process is brilliant, great way to move about and try new things.

    Cons

Public sector pay freeze means wages have gone down in real terms for 5+ years. Big organisation so change can be slow and it's easy to work in the same building as someone for years and never know them.

    Advice to Management

More ways for inter-departmtent networking would be fun.

  7. "ECC 2017"

I have been working at Essex County Council full-time

    Pros

Good people. Lots of variety of jobs available. Usual advantages of Councils (Flexible working, pension scheme, equalities policy etc.). Good rewards offer of discounts with many companies.

    Cons

Reorganisation poorly managed. Human Resources systems poor. Cuts now biting hard after a slow start so less job security. IT not as good as in some other authorities.

    Advice to Management

Scrap the current IT system for staff appraisals and overhaul the HR (ODP) department to make the restructuring and other decisions fairer and less open to challenge. Put in place a council wide commercial strategy with some joined up working to eliminate internal competition and maximise effectiveness of advertising.

I have been working at Essex County Council full-time

    Pros

Easily accessible via public transport - based near rail and bus stations.
The majority of staff are driven, passionate and willing to go above and beyond their remit to make a difference or achieve a goal.
    Flexible/mobile working for most.

    Cons

Current uncertainty due to significant budget pressure - as at September 2017 ECC is undergoing an organisation restructure.

    Advice to Management

Re cognise the po tential im pact of the cur rent un certainty arising from the re structure on productivity and morale.
