    Pros

    Interesting work, nice people, genuinely enjoyed my time there.

    Enforcement and Market Oversight seems to be the best place for paralegals to get some legal experience!

    Cons

    Low base salary and difficult progression if you’re not placed in the right team at the outset. Management has changed so hopefully for the best in terms of giving opportunities to younger employees

    Pros

    Lots of training, opportunity to study MSc in Financial Regulation, flexible working, variety of roles and ability to move around the organisation, scope for progression within many roles, better pay than civil service and FOS, interesting work.

    Cons

    Pay rises very limited, even when progressing upwards in a role or moving internally. Lots of bureaucracy.

    Advice to Management

    Less bureaucracy would mean work would move faster. Reward good employees when they progress.

    Interesting work with the opportunity for exposure to very senior industry practitioners.

    Cons

    Often a political and extremely bureaucratic environment. Can be extremely slow to progress work though multiple governance layers.

    Excellent calibre of staff at Senior Associate and Technical Specialist Level
    All staff have a high level of commitment to the organisation and its mission
    Very interesting work
    Excellent work/life balance
    Inclusive
    CEO leads from the front

    Cons

    Middle management is full of careerists and they are constantly in meetings but actually have no ability to manage staff as all decisions taken at senior levels
    Governance process is exhaustingly slow
    There is no reward or talent management strategy at all
    Silo mentality very bad in some areas

    Advice to Management

    The organisation survives on goodwill by those doing the front-line regulatory work - management is in constant meetings that achieve next to nothing practical - get out of the meeting rooms and lead your staff

    Some excellent managers
    Good benefits
    Bonus scheme
    Interesting work
    Some very talented people
    Easy to work a 9 to 5 day if you're relatively junior

    Cons

    The move to Stratford in 2018 has caused a lot of upheaval
    Good people often leave for private practice as the salaries aren't competitive

    Advice to Management

    More focus retaining talent
    Review lower salaries
    Less use of contractors - employ more full time staff and less fixed term contractors

    Great manager/team
    Work/life balance

    Being in the hub of it
    Despite comments below, I do recommend FCA as an employer- the experience is invaluable for a Risk/Control career in Financial Services

    Cons

    The salary - a £20K+ adrift of what you could get in private sector
    A sometimes unhelpful attitude towards regulated firms. A lot of Supervisors struggle to decipher the Handbook (and often rely on FCA general counsel for assistance), yet are reluctant to share this insight with firms. Remember what the statutory objectives are trying to achieve..
    Some excellent people, but a lot of 'career regulator' deadwood - especially in the London office (Edinburgh office has excellent staff).
    Red tape

    Actually listen to staff and react constructively to it, rather than the usual 'raising visibility' and empty rhetoric.

    Good people, interesting work; relatively good work/life balance

    Cons

    My particular area was very poorly led, with micromanagement and chaos the order of the day. This is in no way symptomatic of the organisation as a whole, but is true in areas.

    Advice to Management

    Look closely at Heads of Department level....
