I worked at Financial Ombudsman Service full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The cooked breakfasts and the diverse backgrounds of the staff who mainly do their best.

    Cons

    1. I can genuinely say I felt bullied, marginalised, humiliated and helpless at FOS. Why? Because unless you were a ‘favourite’ you were never going to be promoted, no matter how hard you worked and irrespective of how competent you were. I felt that only extreme crawling and flirting with senior colleagues would get you noticed – and I saw too much of that and would never stoop. And, to loosely follow a quote from Ford...

    Advice to Management

The FOS has become a nightmare for its staff, a laughing stock across the financial services industry and, even worse, public confidence has (rightly) been shattered. The CEO, her colleagues, the Board and the FCA (who had the FOS set up) are all accountable for this mess. The staff have been saying for a long time that the ‘new way of working’ was not feasible or sustainable, and so none of these parties can claim ignorance....

I worked at Financial Ombudsman Service full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The benefits were good. The hours were decent (but then whats the point in having more time at home if your just going to be sitting there of an evening, absolutely dreading going into work the next day). There were some very good people on the front line (my fellow grunts so to speak)

    Cons

I did not realise about the Glassdoor reviews until A former colleague of mine (from the service) posted a link to the Select Committee interrogation of CW on Facebook. I have to say, having read all of the recent reviews, I can relate to almost every one of them. 3 years on, the picture they paint accurately reflects the many reasons why I left in 2015. Although only in my late 20's at the time, I had nearly a...

    Advice to Management

Whats the point, nothing has changed in several years. Passive aggression and sidelining to those who dare to provide alternate opinions, nepotism, inefficiency, throwing multi millions down the drain on pointless initiatives whilst paying front line staff peanuts, manipulation of statistics to paint a false narrative. The list is endless. And after all this time, they still couldn't care less.

I have been working at Financial Ombudsman Service full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Free toilet paper-most of the time.

    Cons

We were recently treated to the spectacle of Clueless Caroline lying her head off to a parliamentary select committee. Staff are only unhappy because of change she claimed. No. Staff are unhappy because CW and the management team don't have a clue what they are doing and in a short space of time they have trashed the organisation, driven staff out, made life a misery for the remaining staff and greatly reduced the...

    Advice to Management

Your greed and prolonged incompetence are obvious for all to see. You have no credibility at all. How can this continue when the staff despise you? We can't believe a word you say. We see right through you.

    Pros

Very few that will outweigh the train wreck that's going on there.

    Cons

Utter departure from any semblance of a professionally run organisation with important work to do.

    Advice to Management

Resign. If you are considering an application to the Service, you'll have skills and talents. Take them elsewhere until those overseeing this debacle have gone. What you can read here is only the beginning of what's going on. Recent and deeply unimpressive Treasury Select Committee appearance by the Chief Ombudsman should tell you all you need to know.

I have been working at Financial Ombudsman Service full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Flexible working with excellent benefits and lovely colleagues

    Cons

Undue pressure from senior managers Favoritism and politics in from management Lack of recognition Company culture used to be one for its employees, however, the CEO has changed this to be more of a productivity/target focused hostile banking atmosphere, which has ruined the organisation as a place of work for most of its employees.

    Advice to Management

Stop with the politics Listen to your employees Start caring about your employees!

I have been working at Financial Ombudsman Service full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Nice office, reasonable location, good and knowledgable team mates, well those who haven’t left yet. BUPA, gym, pension and some flexible working.

    Cons

So after millions spent on pursuing the Investigation model, it’s now apparent it doesn’t work. So, how to do a u turn and keep your cushy exec job? Introduce ‘transition pods’! Then grovel to the general casework adjudicators to join those pods to do the work the investigators can’t manage, either through lack of time or lack of knowledge. Looks a lot like general casework, but we can’t call it that because that would...

    Advice to Management

Stop pretending you care, stop sending the chairman round to argue with staff on the pretence of listening to their concerns and above all, please please go. Anywhere else you’d have been sacked by now, but no, the gravy train rolls on.

I have been working at Financial Ombudsman Service full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The location and the building. most of the people there. Some flexible working available to people in mass claims. So the job can be good for people with families. This does not apply to the investigator role!

    Cons

Your model of investigation will not work. You have a bunch of monkeys trying to do the job and failing to do it! if you want this model to work you need to employ a better calibre of people. Most of your O.Ms are people who were terrible adjudicators.

    Advice to Management

    you should all be sacked

I worked at Financial Ombudsman Service for more than a year

    Pros

People were great when I joined in 2012, very encouraging to progress and move upwards as an adjudictor.

    Cons

Hired too many people in too short of a space of time and forgot about the more experience adjudictors.

    Advice to Management

    Change CEO

    Pros

    Flexible working and friendly colleagues

    Cons

We all said the new working would not work in the long term and it seems we were right. Change needed to happen, but not in the way it has. CCD did an excellent job and so no-one can understand why they were made redundant. Now overtime is being offered to manage the back log. The same with specialist teams that were disbanded. Apparently not everyone can do every type of case, which everyone bar senior management...

    Pros

Flexible working - if your manager approves When you work specialised areas it is very fulfilling to be confident in one area

    Cons

No real idea of the future No loyalty to existing employees New 'jack of all trades' approach is a shame as it wasted real talent and lets down customers!

    Advice to Management

Go back to the original way of having specialists!
