I have been working at Financial Ombudsman Service

      Pros

The job is interesting and rewarding. The people are on the whole lovely.

      Cons

I've tried so hard since the new way of working came in to encourage everyone and be positive but now I'm totally fed up. The pressure is becoming incredible. If you are hitting target then your work must be low quality or you're missing phone shifts, because trust me there's no way you can hit target whilst doing everything perfectly. Contractors have had their wages increased while we're not even being offered overtime....

      Advice to Management

Admit that it's tough for everyone. Bring back CCD and get rid of phone shifts so that we can concentrate on investigations. Bring in realistic targets and bring back ombudsman who can write decisions. Offer overtime.

I have been working at Financial Ombudsman Service full-time for more than a year

      Pros

Benefits, people, offices and social groups and recommend a friend

      Cons

I would not recommend this organisation to a friend. Average income for the investigator role. Check your contract - the salary may be reviewed down or up depending on performance. 8-8 contract. You could be asked to work from 8am or up to 8pm. Or on a Saturday. This isn't an issue for everyone. Job isn't stimulating or challenging. Not much opportunity in the 'new model' to develop your skill set. Would be better...

I have been working at Financial Ombudsman Service full-time

      Pros

Some of the best peers I've worked with - very helpful, friendly and supportive

      Cons

Management is in over their heads. Extremely stressful environment

      Advice to Management

Investigation needs to focus more on qualitative results and less on quantitative. Bring back career development

I worked at Financial Ombudsman Service full-time for more than 3 years

        Pros

My colleagues, the location, subsidised cafe, 24 hour free gym

        Cons

I’m sure I’ll be echoing the many reviews left before me. I’ve now left FOS, having worked there for over 3 years as an adjudicator and then an investigator. The work culture is disgusting to say the least, it’s very much focused around how much more they can bleed out of you, how many more cases you can close or how many phone shifts you could be doing. The focus is always and forever on what more investigators can...

        Advice to Management

I don’t care much for them. My advice is to my colleagues still working at FOS, I promise the grass is greener and you don’t have to accept this for yourself. There are tons of places eg civil service, local council that will happily employ you, we have got great skills, don’t sell yourself short. Keep trying! A toxic work environment is more likely to change you than you are it, get out!

I have been working at Financial Ombudsman Service full-time for less than a year

        Pros

Nice people, great benefits, flexible working, nice building and environment, staff care about the work they do.

        Cons

staff used to be specialists in a certain type of complaint. This was changed, so now all staff look into everything. This means all staff look at complaints from banking to insurance to mortgages to credit. So what you have now are jack of all trades master of none. Staff are answering compliants with zero knowledge of the product or any idea what they are talking about. This also means everything takes longer...

        Advice to Management

This comes from a person who loves the FOS and thinks it does great work and would like this to be a job for life. But management need to understand that call centre work and being great at investigations are two completely different roles. Staff HATE the phone shifts. They are detrimental to investions. Reconsider the ridiculous decision to put staff on phones and not have a specialist subject. It makes the role impossible...

I have been working at Financial Ombudsman Service full-time for more than a year

        Pros

        Great colleagues and excellent benefits

        Cons

The career prospects are poor. You need to be a long time in the service for you to progress.

        Advice to Management

The recruitment process isn’t achieving its goal. Newly recruited employees join FOS to receive the training and the experience and the majority of them leave in less than 12 months. Career progression within the service is so difficult to achieve that it makes sense to receive the training from FOS and go elsewhere to start a career with that training and start getting paid more.

I have been working at Financial Ombudsman Service full-time for more than 3 years

        Pros

Subsidised cafe, gym, pension, healthcare, there's still a few good people

        Cons

There has been astonishing incompetence for ages and no accountability. We lurch from one crisis to another and only scrape through by pulling the wool over the eyes of select committees and independent investigations. There have been 2 major corporate change projects (initially meant to be done as one) - introducing the investigation model and implementing a new technology/case management programme. The complete failure...

        Cons

there are some people here who just need to move on! if it is that bad you have a choice to leave. no-one is holding you in handcuffs and you are just dragging things down. get used to change as it is everywhere and its just life. you cant hold on to the past and why don't you help the changes instead of hiding in the background being vindictive. please leave and give someone else the chance of a job as you clearly...
