I have been working at First Utility full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Nice working environment
A real Innovative company with an eye on the future of technology
Managers do the best they can for staff

    Cons

HR policy encourages employees to leave
Talent pool loss due to inability to retain staff
Departments do not work well together
    Performance based bonus
No sick or Maternity / Paternity pay

    Advice to Management

Allow employees to get a bigger salary if they deserve one, restricting managers to only allow a max 10% increase in salary or the lowest band of the job they have applied for is causing employees with fantastic knowledge to leave as they know this is the only option to get a salary indicative of their contribution to the company.

A person who moves company often will be on almost double that of someone who is loyal and stays with the business, no care for those who have been with the business for long periods and have hit milestones (5,10,15 years)

I feel our company vision has been lost, we are no longer looking out for people by fighting to get customers on a cheaper tariff and have switched to being the same as the big 6. We have made it to easy for the customer and decent employees to leave us as we do not really provide anything worth staying for and soon those of us who are loyal will look elsewhere, we've lost too many already.

I have been working at First Utility full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Salaries competitive, good work atmosphere, people are friendly, Quidco style incentive scheme

    Cons

Poor company pension contribution, maternity and paternity pay and canteen food plus car parking an issue.

Dependant on the department you work in senior management only seem to last between 1-2 years so continuity with direction is an issue

I have been working at First Utility full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Really supportive and friendly work colleagues.
    - As a company who have gone through significant growth there are improvements that need to be made, however, the company are very aware of these and are constantly working to make the necessary changes.
    - They are very flexible with changing/making improvments as and when necessary.
    - Really nice modern offices, with some good facilities.
    - Really do care about their customers.

    Cons

The benefits available. Poor maternity pay and pension.

    Advice to Management

Look at the core benefits available to employees, these are the things which will make a difference to employee retention. Along with definitive career paths.

I have been working at First Utility full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Great environment, friendly staff, charitable.

    Cons

Whilst we have great benefits, First Perks, staff tariff etc, unfortunately there is a lack of decent maternity pay. A scheme that many people agreed needs improving on a recent JFN, however this was brushed aside in "hopes" that people would forget.

    First Utility Response

Thanks for your honest feedback. It was a direct response to our employee suggestion scheme, JFN, that led to the introduction of First Perks - and within only a few months of launch, First Perks is... More

"Over promote the wrong people- unfair salary increases"

    StarStarStarStarStar
Former Employee - Anonymous Employee in Coventry, England
Former Employee - Anonymous Employee in Coventry, England

I worked at First Utility (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people and the working environment is modern.

    Decent kitchen and downtime areas.

Dress down every day makes it more comfortable to work

Lots of meeting rooms which are easy and accessible to book.

    Cons

Cherry pick who they give payrises & promotions to, make up processes to block those they want. HR are THE worst for this.

Too many in-experienced people in the wrong jobs often doubling their salary because their face 'fits'.

They loose too many good people due to this behaviour and will continue to do so.

They forget people talk and everyone knows the 'under the table' tactics they pull.

If you are genuinely good at your job but have a voice prepare to be over looked and miss out on any pay increases, they save them for the 'yes' people.

    Advice to Management

Stop taking the good people for advantage because it only dampens your reputation.

If you enforce a process then stick to them, especially those that work within HR & Recruitment.

    Remember people talk!

    Pros

Working at first utility is professional but fair. I've only been here for one month but the training and consent support I have received has been brilliant. Small incentives to help you through your day are an added bonus.
