Be sure you have made the right decision

      Pros

You get to put your experience here on a resume, you may even get a position that allows you to make meaningful change and really help people. Weekly opportunities to listen in and even participate in discussions across a broad spectrum of issues, and maybe learn valuable skills. HR genuinely cares and everyone that I met in both departments were amazing people. If you have a problem they listen.

      Cons

Essentially no training - sink or swim on day one. Depending on the department, you will have issues making friends and generally finding people to be genuine. There is an air of mistrust if you are locally engaged staff here - I have never in my life felt a feeling of being judged like I did walking through these halls. People in certain positions like to shift blame and altogether avoid certain parts of their job; Don't be surprised if someone loads their work onto you because they are "too busy". Mental health is blatantly overlooked here, and I wish there was more I could do to help those people that just needed someone to listen and understand. Work/life balance was not in any way a "balance" when I was here.

      Pros

Generally good people to work with. Executives take staff surveys seriously and genuinely try to improve employee satisfaction. Great vacation time (16 days to start, which they actually encourage you to take!) and 401K matching.

      Cons

Most locally engaged staff in the British Defense Staff never leave because it's the only way they can keep their green card/visa to live in the US, so don't EVER expect a position to open up so you can move into a better one. Also the British Government is broke, so raises and bonuses are slim. Not much training or learning and development. Finally, they can't withhold taxes from your paycheck so you have to pay quarterly estimated taxes which is the most miserable process.

      Pros

Great place to work in due to office location, office culture & environment. Local staff are on the whole great to work with. BHC branding is great!

      Cons

More benefits & preferences given to locally engaged UK staff in terms of benefits and salary. Not much interaction between locally engaged staff (ie Singaporeans) and the UK based staff who tend to keep to themselves and their group (ie British). Staff appraisals could be improved with more effort and honesty.

Rewarding but not a long-term career option

      Pros

Opportunity to work on some fascinating policy issues with bright and fun colleagues, engaging with a range of external and internal stakeholders.

      Cons

Poor salary, no scope for growth for locally-engaged staff means that this isn't an ideal long-term career option.
