Startup Scaling Disaster

Pros

Huge opportunity to help turn things around

Cons

Acquisitions consistently mishandled. Alignment issues between Product, Marketing, & Sales. Complete lack of accountability for executives. Corporate schmoozefest with little diversity. Constantly changing strategy. Executive team isn’t interested in you, only wants to extract as much value as possible. Failure happens incredibly slowly. Just looking for an exit. Politics, politics, politics! Recent office move handled poorly with tons of empty space. Too many important functions being run by consultants. Values are eventually used against you.

Pros

- The benefits are hard to beat (but they're often the only reason people choose to stay) - Pay and compensation, as long as you negotiate for it, can be decent

Cons

- Horrible upper management and leadership. Several different executives brought in to try and fix things, but only worse, have gone through countless product leaders (including a horrible choice as part of a recent failing company acquisition) - Zero product vision and they're constantly changing direction - Immaturity and lack of professionalism across the organization, especially sales management. Very "bro" culture, and just disgusting (you'll find bottles of chew spit around the office, and gobs of chew in mouths when on the phone with prospects) - The CEO is focused on exit, not on market fit or providing a compelling offering (they've been lucky to get as far as they have, and now are struggling as a result of no viable product) - Inability and unwillingness to weed out poor performers, along with very questionable HR practices for people management - Customers are not engaged and the product offering under-performs against most any competitor, very difficult to sell and almost impossible to get customers to renew - No career or professional development tracks, guidance or even consideration

Pros

I really have to split this review into two parts - the Kochi office where I worked (which I'd rate 4/5) and the overall upper management of the company (which I'd generously rate 1/5) The team and the people I worked with were absolutely the nicest people. They always were very helpful, and everybody stood up for one another. The Kochi office always had a positive vibe about it, and the management here always made sure to fix anything that caused a drop-off in this positivity. Teams worked together very well, and there is a general sense of excitement about what can be achieved together. The engineering teams in the other offices also had amazing people who were great to work with and were an absolute pleasure to host when they visited.

Cons

At this point, the whole company seems like a headless chicken that changes decisions every quarter, and the other offices are just puppets that have to go along with it. There has never been any reason to trust the management and the decisions they make. Priority is always given to the absolute least important things (like the format of meetings and trying to standardize that). The management blows their horn about everything so much and does nothing to back it up. The overall communication to the lower levels from the upper management is an absolute joke. When there is communication, it is just completely pretentious and sugar-coated. Like the time (very recently) the CEO was very proud about "the best financial situation we've been in", without once mentioning the boat-load of people who had just been laid off. I would be very surprised if any talented people actually stick around here. The attitude and the indecision at the upper level are absolutely toxic. No one is ever sure if they even will have anything to work on in any given quarter, because "the company is changing direction/focus". And when such negativity and uncertainty exists, good and talented folks will realize they're better off somewhere else.
