I have been working at GE full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great flexibility, great inclusion and diversity. T&C's in package good. Smart people at the lower ranks.

    Cons

Upper leadership, (not the new CEO John Flannery) is often poor - lacking real vision and it is full of ego driven leaders who fight for airspace and forget about the people driving its business.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the people in the front line with customers. If you forget about the customers, you won't have income to survive in the future.

I worked at GE full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The variety of work and pace of change will arm anyone with a formidable set of transferable skills and an ability to adapt in new environments that is rare in any other business.

I was exposed to and learned from some amazing leaders and fantastic colleagues, who made every day a learning day. Some incredibly smart and humble people who always felt they were contributing to a bigger purpose than simply the bottom line. None of us forgot how important that was either.

    Cons

Fundamentally, GE is a risk averse organisation and has a system designed to avoid mistakes that would expose the company to litigation. The matrix structure, peer buy-in and multiple process sign offs really do hone your influencing and negotiating skills, but slow down the pace of business and can damage the ability to respond to market opportunities and risks.

    Advice to Management

In the VUCA times we live in, with the pace and extent of industrial disruption we see every day, the Cons need to be rigorously and robustly addressed. If you've spent a decade or more training your EB+ leaders to run businesses, let them run those businesses in a more entrepreneurial way. More mistakes will get made for sure, but the scale of the wins you'll get will far outweigh the losses.
