I worked at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great engineering team. Benefits are ok. Work is challenging. Customer is for the most part reasonable. Support staff is always helpful.

    Cons

Management team is average always pushing for high risk schedules. Treat engineers like pawns moved around in a game board. Unreasonable expectations on amount a time to spent on the job. Unbalanced live-work. Very slow to hire needed staff. No sense of community. Have been cutting down on the benefits steadily in recent years. Ver poor annual pay increases.

    Advice to Management

Learn to treat staff like real people that have families. Push for balanced live-work.

I worked at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

GD is involved in a lot of different applications of aerospace and IC knowledge for a wide set of customers in the Colorado Springs area.

    Cons

General Dynamics is a very large aerospace industry contractor. Their Colorado springs operations are not tied into the main business base on the East Coast too well and thus business decisions often support tactical and strategic needs of East Coast business but not Front Range business -- so the employees in Colorado struggle constantly.

Former Employee - Principal Systems Engineer in McLeansville, NC

I worked at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Unique work, friendly people, 9/80 work schedule

    Cons

Would have liked to see more (actually any) emphasis on continuing education. I was interested in going back for my MBA and the run around I received was exhausting. I would have preferred a straight no to any kind of financial help, instead I was told yes, no, yes, and then a no after I had already started the program.

I have been working at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Defense work; good talent; innovative designs; long history of satisfying DOD customers

    Cons

Brain drain; lack of focus; unclear objectives; dehumanizing layoff practices; poor communications

    Advice to Management

Treat people better; communicate "real" information, not just "flag waving"; make up your minds about what business we're in; stop reorganizing every year or two; stop reading the Harvard Business Review and start talking to your employees.

    Pros

    Cons

Worked tons of overtime for long periods of time with little to no recognition Management more worried about "plugging holes" in the company with people rather than trying to place people with jobs they are best suited for Very opaque management Poor work atmosphere

    Advice to Management

Be more open and forthcoming (to an extent of course) with employees Work with employees more in re-assigning to other jobs

I have been working at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Pay is reasonable (benefits are mediocre), lots of equipment to work on. Some people are very highly skilled and working hard. If you like travel, there are lots of opportunities.

    Cons

10% of technical staff are really sharp, the rest are taking up space. Management is asleep at the wheel. Upper management pays no attention to staff morale, and ignores the workers. It's nearly impossible to make an actual difference by doing a good job and going above and beyond.

I have been working at General Dynamics Mission Systems

    Pros

Top notch engineers, cutting edge C3I technologies, job stability, flexibility, extensive benefits, tuition reimbursement, challenging work, opportunitiy to advance if well connected.

    Cons

Politics and bureaucracy, lack of recognition, restriction compensation growth, limited opportunities to try out new technology outside of immediate project.

    Advice to Management

Become more employee centric, reduce politics, provide incentives for teams to work faster, pick team leads that are good leaders.
