I have been working at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Fairly large employer for such a small town

    Cons

Senior management doesn't seem to notice that the economy has recovered. Salaries have stayed stagnant and talent is leaving for opportunities in other locales.

    "Great company"

    StarStarStarStarStar
Senior Systems Engineer in Scottsdale, AZ

I have been working at General Dynamics Mission Systems

    Pros

Flexible, decent benefits, lateral movement is possible to explore what you are interested in. If you show you are interested, they will see it and you will be given opportunities.

    Cons

I don’t see many cons. Benefits could be a little better. Really it’s a great company. Will be interesting to see how it looks once the rollover of military defense comes.

    Advice to Management

I have been working at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

GDMS is a true engineering company. They have over 7K engineers that support 6 Lines of Businesses who are all pushing the bounds of technology, building amazing products and ultimately keeping our home soil safer. They have all kinds of customers to include the DOD, IC, Public Safety, Commercial sector, etc. Great opportunities to grow and work across domains, hence learn new things and acquire new skills.

    Cons

There are 7K Engineers so it is very competitive if you are looking to grow and advance, but I guess that's natural.

I have been working at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

No lack for work, lots of technical expertise required and great group of engineers to work for.

    Cons

Large company with minimal upward growth. Difficult to get a good mentor that will get you what you need to do your job efficiently.

    Advice to Management

Managers are more concerned about having heads in the department than actually benefiting a person's career. It would be nice to see more movement between departments and salaries on par with other companies.

I worked at General Dynamics Mission Systems

    Pros

A lot of room to find your niche

    Cons

Given that the culture here was so in chaos, there was a lot of room for a person to deviate from original tasking (self created) and to find one’s area of expertise. The management was so disconnected from its workforce managing crisis management modes all the time, little was done to prepare me for success as a new hire (well, at 4 months a plan was actually formulated). Furthermore, the workforce on the LCS program was 30% temp employee’s ; says a lot about how to manage technical issues. The culture just tossed “bodies” at problems, thinking that would solve the problem. It surprised me actually to learn that less then 20 % of the workforce were actually Veterans of the arms forces. A lot of super smart book smart people, with little understanding of the military culture of how things worked. By far in my 27 years as a contractor, this was the worse program, and company I have ever worked.

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to manage crisis, and become proactive in your problem solving approach to a riddled program amass of technical challenges. Listen to your engineering team, go for the long game and not the short term fix.

I worked at General Dynamics Mission Systems full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Interesting work. Great people. Good benefits

    Cons

Management too focused on getting contracts and not on execution. Career development is employee's responsibility. Slow to adopt new tools and processes. Unless you are deemed a required specialist, you are viewed as replaceable even with a good work record and strong skills.

    Advice to Management

Much more commitment to people development and retention.
